Pretoria: Where to eat with the kids this winter

Kids driving you to a bit of cabin fever? Luckily, there are a few indoor options in Pretoria where you can have the best of both worlds: good food for the adults and activities for the kids. Here are a few of our top picks.

Clay Café (Olifantsfontein)

Clay Café is the perfect venue for kids who enjoy expressing their creativity. Children can choose from a wide array of unfired clay objects, from plates to cups and fun kiddies’ objects. Clay Café serves top-quality breakfasts and lunches from a café-style menu, freshly baked cakes and Truth coffee. It also caters for the little ones with a kiddies’ menu, which includes a build-your-own pottery pizza. A week later your masterpiece will be ready for collection. A great concept plus great food makes for a fun day out.

The Fun Room (Waterkloof)

This place is all about fun. They’ve only been open for a few months, but already they’re consistently busy. With a massive indoor playroom – one section for littlies under two and another for kids up to 12 – you can relax in the café next door knowing your kiddies will be well looked after. Although their main focus is on play, food is also a top priority. The café offers a fairly small but quality breakfast-and-lunch menu for both adults and kids that includes salads, tramezzinis and bruschettas. There’s also free WiFi if you need to catch up on some work. They’re in the process of applying for their liquor licence so soon you’ll also be able to enjoy a glass of wine with friends.

Go-Play Kids Indoor Play & Café (Centurion)

Similar to The Fun Room, Go-Play is the perfect spot to bring your high-energy kids on those cold winter days – it has a massive indoor play area, one for littlies and the other for kids aged four to 12. It has everything from climbing equipment to slides and even mazes, all of which is sure to keep kids occupied for hours. The best thing is that there are child-minders to keep an eye on them while you sip on a cappuccino or enjoy a light meal in the café. The varied menu includes everything from freshly baked cakes and tarts to breakfasts, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, pastas, samoosas, spring rolls and pizzas. For the children they also have a kiddies menu and a One-Stop Candy Shop.

Modern Italian Kitchen (Menlo Park)

As its name implies, this is a modern Italian restaurant. It specialises in crisp, thin-based pizzas topped with everything from the usual to interesting gourmet flavours such as spiced lamb with yoghurt and coriander, and cold-smoked salmon with sour cream, strawberries and pesto. The main attraction for parents is the amazing kids’ play area that, although outdoors, is covered. And for those littlies who are more creative than rambunctious, Modern Italian Kitchen also offers other activities like sand art, cookie baking, plaster mould painting and the ever-popular make-your-own pizza. Apart from the pizzas, they also have an extensive kids’ menu with options like pasta, ribs and meatballs. Dessert comprises irresistible items like Nutella-and-marshmallow pizza.
