Pretoria’s top spots for high tea

Updated 23 September 2021

History doesn’t tell us how many problems Anna Russell – the seventh Duchess of Bedford – had, but we do know that mid-afternoon hunger spells was one of them. She came up with an ingenious solution: hot tea, an array of yummy nibbles and a bit of skinder with her BFFs: and so was born the grand old tradition of afternoon tea. In the spirit of all things dainty and delicious, we went searching for Pretoria’s finest tea spots.

Anja’s Tea Garden (Zwavelpoort)

After winter comes spring and summer – time to explore Anja’s lovely revamped function space The Stoep. During Covid-19 restrictions, Anja’s focused on takeaway meals and their shop. They are now ready to take group bookings again. Groups from 14 to 24 people can be accommodated. Enjoy lovely views of the garden, pretty floral crockery, table runners and fresh roses. Guests are welcomed with pitchers of homemade gingerbeer and iced strawberry rooibos tea. Your high tea booking ensures that the table is laid ready for you and your guests. High tea costs R250 per person and includes a selection of four sweet and four savoury snacks, served on pretty floral crockery. Gluten-free and banting-friendly options are available.

Castello di Monte (Waterkloof Ridge)

The ritual of afternoon or morning tea is escapism at its most elegant and sugary best. Break free of the daily humdrum and head to this Tuscan-inspired five-star gem in Pretoria’s leafiest ’hood. For R550 per person, you’ll receive tea and coffee, sparkling wine, an array of delights crafted and – for mahala – one of the city’s most beautiful views. They require a minimum of eight guests per booking. Morning tea can be booked from 11am to 2pm, while afternoon tea is served between 3pm and 6pm.

The Deluxe Tea (R170pp) includes sparkling wine, quiche tart, a slice of cake, a fruit skewer, a pot of tea or a regular cappuccino. Special functions can also be catered for with a dedicated menu tailored to your function.

Ivory Manor (Rietvalleirand)

Striking views and sumptuous interiors set the scene for this high tea experience. A group booking is essential. The offerings are well balanced between sweet and savoury. Delectable quiches, beef tartar, salmon roulade with cream cheese, crispy chicken spring rolls, and scones with infused jams and brie are just some of what you can expect at this decadent high tea. The menu is available at R550 per person and a minimum group size of 15 people applies.
