Review: Warm & Glad in Craighall Park

A popular breakfast spot and café of choice in Jozi, Warm & Glad is a great place to set up office for the day. Not only because the WiFi is consistent and free, but because the food and coffee are on point.

Food

The scrambled free-range eggs fly out of the kitchen in the mornings and arrive served with (optional) crème fraîche and toast. You also have a choice of sides including crispy Parma ham and smoked Chilean salmon, but unfortunately no bacon. (Apparently the smell is too ‘strong’ for the space.)

Other morning munchies include granola, oats porridge and pancakes, and then a selection of massive sandwiches with fillings such as fried chorizo, pulled roast chicken and gorgonzola, which are available from 12pm.

If you’re coming in a for a late meeting or catch-up with a friend, there’s excellent wine on offer, a glass of which is best enjoyed with what they call a small plate. Choices range from duck liver pâté and toast to fried goat’s cheese with thyme and honey. The menu has also been extended to include pasta – al dente penne served with the topping of a vegetarian or meat sauce of your choice – as well as the soup of the day.

Drinks

Freshly squeezed juices, craft beers and family-owned wine labels make an appearance on the drinks menu. The whisky list has been curated by the team from renowned specialist store WhiskyBrother.

Service

Easy-going, cheerful staff will make you feel like an old friend of the establishment.

Ambience

Seated here, listening to vinyl, you could quite imagine you’re in a quirky New-York-style café rather than an eatery on one of the busiest roads in Johannesburg.

And…

Warm & Glad has opened a new wine bar next door called Ace + Pearl, catering to the after-5pm crowd who have a nose for good, non-commercial wines. The focus is on sharing winemakers’ stories and exposing wine lovers to new labels.
