Rooibos latte makes it big overseas

Two rooibos drinks have been launched on the menus at Starbucks branches in Europe – and are getting rave reviews – according to an article by Business Insider.

Starbucks is now serving a rooibos latte and a red apple rooibos latte in Europe, made with a specially designed microground tea. According to a spokesperson for the brand, they have been well received.

The important news was covered by The Daily Mail, The Star and the Metro, and the Huffington Post UK’s self-proclaimed die-hard tea lover gave them a great review. Journalist Natasha Hinde said she was “anticipating disappointment” (but why, we ask?), but was impressed by the strength of flavour and declared it “overall a very comforting winter drink”.

“I fell head-over-heels for the red apple rooibos tea latte… It’s the kind of sweet treat you need in your life when you hit your 3pm lull in the office,” she said.

In the UK, the small latte will set you back £2.75.

The rooibos Starbucks drinks were also released in Canada back in February, with the addition of rose petals.

Rooibos is also available in Seattle in the USA at a small cafe called Cederberg Tea House. (It’s named after rooibos’s celebrated production region.) According to Seattle Mag, their red latte “is made like it is in South Africa – pulled through an espresso machine”. (You guys know we also just put the teabag in hot water, right?)  Cederberg Tea House also reportedly serves koeksisters. This gives us another great reason to visit Seattle, apart from taking a Grey’s Anatomy tour.

In the UK rooibos tea was once the preserve of expat shops in the UK, but is now available at major retailers like Sainsburys.

Listen closely to the tea choices in US television series Smilf and you’ll also pick up a mention of rooibos. (Though we have to confess we were slightly amused by their pronunciation!)

All hail our beloved tea (that actually isn’t a tea, but anyway).
