Rotisserie chicken, flatbreads and dips: Popular Joburg food truck opens street-food deli in Illovo

Fresh from the team behind Tutto Food Co., the mobile restaurant and catering company seen at markets around Jozi, is Baba G, a small rotisserie deli focusing on street food with a fusion of Afro-Mediterranean flavours. The new deli, which is now open at the Post Office Centre in Illovo, is offering a short menu of spiced free-range chickens, in-house flatbreads and fresh salads that will give locals a taste of north Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe.

Baba G’s main focus will be on good quality ingredients and in-house products. The flatbreads are prepared with unbleached, stone-ground flour and left to develop for 24 hours, before being cooked front-of-house on a bread dome brought back from Israel.

Chickens are sourced from a free-range supplier and are free from routine antibiotics and hormones. The chooks are dusted with one of the home-made spice blends – herbs and salt, Middle Eastern with lemon, and north African with a kick of chilli – and roasted on the French rotisserie until tender, juicy and golden. Your choice of chicken is served in whole, half, or quarter portions, or as a filling to one of the bread offerings.

To kick things up a notch, the team is also offering a choice of fresh salads and the lafa (flatbread) bar will offer a selection of in-house pickles, drizzles and dips to accompany the pillow breads, flatbreads and wraps that can act as a vessel for your chicken.
