Review: Sandton’s swanky Alice & Fifth

When you go to Sandton’s Alice & Fifth, you’re going there for dinner and a show. There’s a stage at the heart of the restaurant where there are live performances weekly, ranging from live bands to comedy nights and burlesque. The eclectic menu, filled with African-inspired cuisine, is just an added extra.

Food

As a starter, you could go for the bacon-wrapped scallops with a pea-and-beetroot puree, though the smoked back bacon can be a little overpowering. For mains, choose between wildebeest loin and impala shank. The flavour on the wildebeest is great but the loin is rather tough, even for game meat. You could also go for the deboned baby chicken, which is definitely more enjoyable and tender.

The portions here are sizeable, meaning you may not have room for dessert. If you do, opt for the malva pudding with custard, brandy and caramel.

Drinks

The drinks menu is digital. You’re given an iPad menu that’s nestled in a traditional velvet menu folder. Speciality cocktails are in a beautiful well-illustrated storybook. The drinks are pricey, but remember that there’s no cover charge for the on-stage entertainment. Keep in mind that there are three bars: one is for members only, the second is part of the restaurant and the other is in the nightclub.

Service

One of the best service experiences. From the waiter to the manager, you’ll be treated like royalty.

Ambience

One of the first things that grabs your attention when you arrive at Alice & Fifth is its unapologetic poshness. The dark wall-to-wall wooden panels remind you of a bygone era when private clubs were the order of the day. Don’t get it twisted, though – Alice & Fifth is very much a present-day private dining room and club. The Dolce and Gabbana-inspired marble, accentuated all over the restaurant, emphatically reminds you that you’re in Sandton City’s Diamond Walk, the richest square mile in Africa. Soon there’ll also be a luxurious nightclub in an adjoining room.
