Schoon de Companje: Old-world charm, great bread and deli heaven

Schoon de Companje is a collaboration effort between artisanal baker Fritz Schoon, his wife (the head chef) Chanelle, his sister Katryn and a handful of friends. The property has been artfully extended from the Oude Bank Bakkerij, a bakery housed in the old bank building, and now occupies the corner of Bird and Church streets. It features an ice cream parlour, wine shop, bar, a butchery that sells ethically sourced meat, a deli selling organic produce and dairy products, a coffee roastery and the casual restaurant itself.  The space is usually packed, especially over weekends, so expect to queue for a seat. On Saturday evenings a live band plays, drawing students and the sophisticated set together.

The food

The menu hinges around the superb bread made in the bakery. The signature sourdough is prepared over three days in a gentle and careful process. Sandwiches and slices of bread with various toppings such as homemade spreads and local cheeses dominate the lunch menu. (Try the bacon hot presser with caramelised onions and feta.) Pizzas are served on Saturday evenings, pairing well with their selection of craft beers on offer. A small selection of desserts and pastries is also available.

The service

Service is thorough even over the weekends when the double-storey space fills up. Fritz and Chanelle are always present.

The drinks

There’s a wonderful selection of wines, craft beer and perfectly roasted coffees. Select a bottle of wine from the well-curated wine shop and enjoy it with your meal. Hot chocolate is made with real chocolate chips.

The ambience

Schoon de Companje’s décor is a cosy combination of old-world and hip. The low chairs upstairs resemble repurposed luggage cases, a faded Dutch VOC flag is painted on the wall and heavy metal chains hang from the ceiling. The Delft-inspired crockery used in the restaurant is also up for sale.

And…

Try the Fanny Chanel small-batch ice cream after your meal and grab a loaf of bread, farm-fresh butter and preserves for tea.
