Pop-up oyster bar opens on Bree Street

Cape Town’s culinary hotspot, Bree Street, will welcome a contemporary seafood restaurant this autumn when SeaBreeze Fish & Shell opens its doors in the beautiful heritage buildings and former location of Palma Restaurant. In the meantime, seafood lovers can get a taste with the launch of SeaBreeze’s sidewalk pop-up bar.

Find the oyster pop-up bar on the pavement at 211-213 Bree Street from Wednesday to Saturday, 5.30pm to 8.30pm for the next month. Photo supplied.

The eatery is the brainchild of Ruth and Alex Grahame, who hail from Scotland, where they owned owned and operated Hornblowers Seafood Restaurant in Gourdon. Their new South African venture, SeaBreeze Fish & Shell, promises to bring a fresh take on traditional seafood restaurants, while celebrating the Mother City’s rich heritage with local, sustainable seafood presented creatively and with a lighter touch. The restaurant menu will change daily, aiming to feature fresh-as-you-can-get seafood with an emphasis on its natural flavours.

In the meantime, the pop-up shellfish bar will be serving a variety of oysters, sourced across South Africa, as well as prawns, langoustines and a selection of changing shellfish items that will be prepared in front of customers behind the shellfish bar. As for the drinks, the SeaBreeze restaurant and pop-up bar have partnered with local suppliers to bring libations of MCC, wine, rum cocktails and other spirits, Cape-brewed craft lagers and ales, local cider and soft drinks.

While you’ll have to wait until autumn 2017 to book at table at the restaurant, you can grab an oyster or two at the pop-up bar on the pavement at 211-213 Bree Street from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday, for the next month.
