Plans revealed for second Jamie Oliver restaurant in SA

Jamie OliverPeople can’t stop talking about Jamie’s Italian coming to Melrose Arch towards the end of this year, but we have more big news: another restaurant in the collection will be opening in Cape Town in early 2017.

While we can’t yet reveal the location, we can say it will be in a pre-eminent shopping development in the Mother City. Leasing agreements are still being finalised, but there are talks to open a bar as well as a restaurant at the venue.

And there are even more Jamie’s Italian eateries to come. “It’s part of our development agreement that we will open five restaurants in South Africa in seven years,” revealed Stephen Gersowsky, one of the executive directors of Whisky Creek, the exclusive operating partner for Jamie’s Italian in South Africa.

The menus of all the group’s restaurants focus on simple, accessible everyday Italian food like fresh pasta (made in-house on sexy Ferrari-red machines) and organic, free-range and locally sourced ingredients. The traceability and provenance of each ingredient is of the utmost importance, and each supplier must conform to exceedingly high standards, down to the hours of daylight their chickens get each day.

While Jamie himself isn’t confirmed to attend the launch in Melrose Arch in the spring, Louise Ludlum, director of projects and communication for Jamie’s Italian, told us, “He’s really keen to visit South Africa, though, so it will definitely be on his agenda in the future.”

Who knows? He might be coming to your neck of the woods someday soon. Keep your eyes on Eat Out for further updates.
