The new spot promises to give locals and tourists a taste of 1930s shisa nyama, which will feature braai-style meat with local sides like African mfino spinach and spicy Durban pineapples.
The location overlooks the blue Indian ocean, boasting a downstairs café with coastal views as well as a classy upstairs lounge for more formal affairs. The lower level focuses on traditionally grilled meat; all-day breakfasts with a South African twist; shisa nyama platters (wors, wings, steaks and more); bunny chow; and easy-eating Durban-themed tacos.
The upstairs lounge is more suited to those looking for a drink with a view, and offers guests a selection of cuts from top KZN butchers, Msanzi-inspired tapas, whiskies and a live jazz DJ on weekends.
Both menus are designed by Brendon Newport of Surf Riders, along with chefs Comfort Kweyama and Peter Simmonds tending the grills in the kitchen.
The Joint Jazz Café operates seven days a week, with the lounge open for jazz from Wednesday to Sunday until late.
