Sushi burritos land in South Africa

Last year we reported on the pokérrito, the inevitable hybrid combining the trendy poké bowl with perennial favourite, the burrito. The dedicated pokérrito bar was based in Canada, though, and we declared an open invitation for the like to open in SA. Now it seems Sushi Burrito & Co in Joburg has heeded our call.

There are options that classic sushi lovers will appreciate, like the raw salmon burrito (R110) with salmon sashimi, cilantro, romaine lettuce, surimi crab, red onions, sesame seeds, cucumber ‘spaghetti’, guacamole and wasabi sauce. There’s also a tempura prawn burrito (R99), with similar fillings as well as tempura prawns, gari, pineapple, nanami-togarashi spice and cajun mayonnaise.

You could also try the crispy duck burrito (with beetroot ‘spaghetti’ and hoisin sauce) or the deep-fried pork neck burrito (with coleslaw, capsicum, bean sprouts, sriracha chillies and sweet-and-sour sauce), which go for R96 and R92 respectively. There are two vegetarian options, one with tempura butternut (R68) and another called the ‘Just Vege’ burrito (R80), filled with a variety of vegetables, sundried tomatoes, crispy kale, pan-fried halloumi and teriyaki sauce.

In an admirable effort to anger food purists, there is also a fish-and-chips burrito, filled with panko-crumbed pangasius fish, cilantro, spring onion, ginger, coleslaw and, yes, slap chips. We’re reserving judgement until we can get our envious hands on them ourselves.

If you’re unadventurous in the dining department, never fear: Sushi Burrito & Co also does bao buns, noodle dishes, salads and normal poké bowls for you to enjoy while your friends Instagram away.
