Johannesburg

Casalinga Ristorante (Muldersdrift)
For 25 years we have consistently received excellent service, delicious and well-presented food, and an astounding wine selection. And with Lloyd around, you can always be assured of personal attention and feeling right at home.

Just love going to Coobs – always incredible food and service! Basically, everything on the menu is phenomenal.

Craft (Parkhurst)
Our table of seven consisted of six adults and five-year-young Zoe. Zoe, despite her age, is quite a discerning eater – much like her parents – and she was very satisfied with her kid’s breakfast. There were times when I had to stop myself from taking a sip of that delicious marshmallow milkshake she’d ordered! Milkshakes have no age limit.

Dylan’s (Parkmore)
Lovely little hidden gem. Delicious food and value for money. There were only a few of us in the restaurant and they were a bit on the slow side, mostly with clearing the table and placing our order, but otherwise a very good experience all around!

Licorish Bistro (Bryanston)
I went to Licorish for the first time for lunch with three girl friends. We decided to each choose a different starter and share. Every single dish was beautifully presented and tasted superb and, with a glass of wine each, it cost R100 per person.

Verdicchio Restaurant and Wine Cellar (Montecasino, Fourways)
Verdicchio offers an amazing ambiance, fantastic food and superb service. The dim lighting makes for a romantic setting, which is perfect for dates and special occasions – my wife is on my case for us to return!

Harissa Bistro (Hazelwood)
The manager greeted us at the door as we walked in and we felt very welcome. The staff are very friendly and entertaining. I ordered the chickpea balls and my colleague ordered a burger. The food was amazing. I will go back time and again for the chickpea balls. Oh, and they offer freshly squeezed juices. Delicious!!

The Restaurant at Sanbonani Resort Hotel (Hazyview)
This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever eaten at. The people are so welcoming and nice, and the food so mouth-watering. I love them.

Beira Alta (Ballito)
Made my first visit to Beira Alta recently on my birthday with my husband, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The prawns were really well prepared and delicious. Service was great. Good atmosphere. I would love to go back soon!

Birds Café (Bree Street, City Bowl)
The poached eggs, bacon and chickpea-and-bean breakfast was perfect: free-range eggs cooked to medium, which oozed just the right amount when sliced open; crisp bacon that was rich with flavour; and a lovely rich tomatoey chickpea-and-bean sauce. It was also nice and calm inside – not something that can be said of some of the other breakfast spots on Bree Street on a Saturday!

Culture Club Cheese (Bree Street, City Bowl)
Fabulous menu selection and service. Generous portions, well presented and absolutely delicious. The cheese selection is amazing – definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a special cheese.

El Burro Taqueria (Tamboerskloof)
Love the ceviche and the esquites here. I’m less excited about the tacos somehow – I feel like they need more sauce, lime juice or cheese (although I’m told the chilli sauce on the tables is pretty great; will try it next time). The beef quesadillas where fab, though – a good option if you’re after that melted-cheese experience.

Four & Twenty (Chelsea Village, Wynberg)
Absolutely excellent Sunday treat with the whole family. Such a cute café setting and the baked goods were absolutely delicious. A must for sweet tooths in Cape Town!

The General Store (Bree Street, City Bowl)
I’ve yet to try the tasty-looking array of lunch options, but the chocolate pistachio brownie deserves a review of its own. In my personal quest for the perfect brownie, it comes close to perfection. Superlatively gooey, with a slightly crisp flaky top. I’m not sure the pistachios are even necessary.

Goloso Restaurant (Sea Point)
Goloso is my favourite place for pasta. The seafood risotto was tasty – a nice balance of cheese and lemony seafood – and the gnocchi balsamico was rich and sublime.

From the second you walk in you are welcomed into a relaxed environment… The one thing that really stands out is that you are able to watch the chefs prepare your food fresh and with care.

Jerry’s Burger Bar (Gardens)
I went to Jerry’s for my fourth time this past weekend and the food is still top notch! Juicy burger and awesome fries. I also tried sriracha for the first time at Jerry’s and I must say it’s fast becoming one of my favourite hot sauces. The only down side is that the service is a little slow and it took them a little longer than expected to take our order, but I can easily overlook that for the amazing food they serve.

Massimo’s (Hout Bay)
I am a cook by profession, so when I say that Massimo’s serves the best damn carbonara I have ever eaten, it should mean something. My wife and I dined at Massimo’s twice during our two-week vacation in Cape Town, and each time received excellent service and food that makes me regret not living in Hout Bay.

Pirates Steakhouse Pub & Grill (Plumstead)
They are famous for their steaks, ribs and burgers, but my favourite is the calamari. It is the best I have ever tasted anywhere. Be sure to book, as they are very popular.

Spasie (Church Street, City Bowl)
Went to Spasie when the chef was Harald Bresselschmidt. What an amazing evening. Harald took us through the menu in detail and interacted with everyone, and the waiting staff are attentive but not intrusive.

Tiger’s Milk (Muizenberg)
This place makes my favourite dish in the entire world. The roast leg of lamb, olives, feta and humus pizza is the best thing I have tasted in my life! And the best part is they offer it on a gluten-free base, which even more satisfies my fussy needs!

Tjing Tjing Rooftop Bar (Longmarket Street, City Bowl)
A truly sensational foodie experience. Our group of six ordered the entire menu and shared among ourselves. The service was good, the waiters were around but not, which was great. Highly recommended.

Winelands

96 Winery Road (Stellenbosch)
This restaurant has been our safe place for more than 18 years now, so what more to say than delicious comfort food, efficient service and a fabulous wine list? Why go to chain restaurants when you get such true food?

Bistro 13 (Stellenbosch
We had the privilege to enjoy a lovely wine tasting and lunch at Bistro 13. We enjoyed the lovely and very informative wine tasting first and after that had the most delicious food at the restaurant. Literally, it was the best steak we have ever eaten.

Joostenberg Bistro (Muldersvlei)
This truly is a restaurant for all occasions and all seasons. In summer it is open to the beautiful gardens and rolling lawns; in winter the huge log fire keeps it cosy and warm. Susan and Christoph are professional hosts, combining Christoph’s excellent and varied fare with Susan’s attentive, calm presence in the restaurant.

The Restaurant at Waterkloof (Somerset West)
We discovered this wonderful restaurant a couple of years ago. And what a discovery! Stunning views, magnificent architecture, and sublime food and wine. The service is among the best we have experienced at any restaurant. We will have to find an excuse to go back soon.

The Tasting Centre at Rupert & Rothschild (Simondium)
I predict this is going to be one of THE destinations in the Winelands! The Wines of the World Wine and Food Tasting was an absolute treat. I think the confit duck with cherry and juniper was my favourite… or maybe the crispy Karoo lamb. I do not know of another place with an imported French fromage selection like they have here – I’m still dreaming about the truffle cheese!

Fresh at Paul Cluver (Elgin)
My friend and I had the privilege of dining at Fresh for lunch this past Saturday. Two words: gastronomic feast! We were seated at the communal table, which is just a lovely idea. The wine (Paul Cluver Village Pinot Noir) was superb, the atmosphere most cosy and comfortable, and the food delicious! Truly a fantastic experience all round. Please go. Don’t delay. But book in advance.
