Antique Café (Morningside)

This quaint spot might look like just a vintage store from the street, but inside the house is a homely café that serves seasonal breakfast, brunch and lunch plates. Expect dishes like the eggs Benedict with free-range eggs, crispy lamb bacon, and Hollandaise, or the creamy sweetcorn scrambled eggs with chopped lamb rashers, spring onion, and parmesan shavings. On the sweet end of the spectrum, dive into the French toast with treacle sugar, berries crème anglaise and Nutella.

Bellevue Café (Kloof)

Brunches are quite a thing at this homely spot and they’re served until 11.30am for the late risers. Think freshly baked croissants, fruit bowls, and poached eggs with smoked salmon and crispy kale. There’s also a comforting and cheesy Welsh rarebit to cure the after-effects of a late night.

The Farmer’s Daughter (Howick)

The ideal brunch pit stop en route to the Midlands, this family-friendly spot offers gorgeous countryside views and a mean breakfast menu. From lush Benedicts to golden croissants stuffed with fluffed-up eggs, the menu has something for everyone. If you’re going for a non-boozy brunch, the beautiful fresh juices will hit the spot. Be sure to check out the cakes and pastries on your way out.

Glenwood Bakery (Glenwood)

Locals flock to this suburban gem for lazy mid-morning feasts. While the classic eggs Benedict is wildly popular here, it’s the weekly specials that get us truly excited. Options might includepoached eggs in red wine sauce with baby onions, mushrooms and bacon; onion bagel with warm salt beef and house pickles; Sicilian breakfast pizza with chorizo and egg; and buttermilk flapjacks with crispy pancetta or blueberries. Take a bottle of bubbles along with you to seal the deal, or sip on one of the expertly made coffees.

Jackie Cameron Culinary School Outlet (Hilton)

Jackie Cameron’s latest venture with former student Kate Cousins serves up glorious all-day brunches in the countryside. sip on wines and bubbles by the glass as you tuck into a spread of brunch-inspired starters, mains and desserts. Dishes include braai oil ostrich tartare with ash mayonnaise and garden picked chive yoghurt; waygu mince souffle omelette with mozzarella and kimchi; and butternut pie with cinnamon, meringue, and a frangipane and butternut puree.

BR.unch Time ——————————————————————————— A beautiful trout ‘cottage pie’ at @jackiecameronincolour’s The School Outlet – complete with cold smoked trout, a perfectly boiled egg, @thegourmetgreek yoghurt and crispy capers. The dish is one of a 3 course brunch offering served up at The School Outlet, a wonderful, little day-time eatery attached to The Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine. —————————————————————————— I’ll be at the school for the next two weeks judging the students’ final practicals as well as taking some time to explore the area. Joint Jazz Café (OR Tambo Parade)

This jazz spot on the beachfront is not serving up tasty shisanyama only. Enjoy a late start with one of the sunny breakfast options that are served all day. The Mzansi-inspired choices include eggs with mushrooms, chakalaka beans, local wors and belly bacon; pork sausage on sweet-potato toast; and a toppling Zulu flapjack stack served with rooibos syrup, whipped cream, banana, bacon, lemon and basil ricotta. If you’re into the simpler things, go for Marmite on toast, or a boozy Bloody Mary liquid breakfast with celery.

Market (Greyville)

Breakfasts are served all day at this courtyard eatery. Expect dishes like cinnamon hotcakes with banana; wild mushroom toast with oven roasted tomatoes; French toast croissant with strawberries, honey and lavendar; and courgette and corn fritters with crème fraîche, cherry tomatoes and basil pesto. On the drinks side of things, freshen up with a bottle of bubbles or some craft beers.

Old Town Italy (Umhlanga)

This Italian market restaurant serves up great deli-style eats and rich pastas, but the breakfasts are worth a stop too. Enjoy a late-morning bite featuring free-range eggs, freshly baked breads and cured Italian meats. The large menu ranges from classic salmon scrambled eggs or cheese-and-marmalade croissants to shakshuka with a Napoletana sauce and cannellini beans or sausage patty breakfast with poached eggs and home-made orange-and-ginger marmalade. Wash it down with imported La Dolce Vita Caffe coffee, specialty teas, or cold-crushed juices.

Parc (Glenwood)

This easy-going favourite is known for serving brilliant brunches to locals spilling out onto the sidewalk. The Not-So-Benedict is always a winner, with a sprinkling of salty capers on top. Other exciting options might include banana bread French toast with textures of coconut, ruby grapefruit and chocolate soil; curried sugar bean and potato hash with cherry tomatoes, poached eggs and cheddar cheese; or the seriously indulgent bacon and brie breakfast with butter-fried bread, bacon, local brie cheese and balsamic cherry tomatoes. Be sure to grab a spot early to enjoy the live acoustic music on the pavement.

Surf Riders Food Shack (OR Tambo Parade)

This wildly popular spot is located on Durban’s Golden Mile and serves up great breakfast grub for late risers. Look to the Breakfast Works for something extra satisfying. This includes a sesame bun filled with two poached eggs, gouda, chorizo, boerewors, and gravy, which is baked in a pizza oven before being topped with Hollandaise sauce. If you’re after something less indulgent, there are five different Benedicts from which to choose, including one with seared yellowfin tuna and avo.
