This week’s winner of the SAB #BESTPUBLUNCH competition: Seafarer Pub & Grill in Strand

Brought to you by SAB

Eat Out and SAB are on a quest to find the best pub lunch in the Eastern and Western Cape. Over the coming months, some of the Cape’s favourite pubs, bars and grills will be taking part in the #BESTPUBLUNCH campaign. They’ll each be offering a pub lunch and draught beer special as their entry – but it’s down to you to pick the winners by casting your vote here: bestpublunch.co.za. We’ll be announcing the winner each week on Eat Out, and sending our own critic to report back.

Seafarer Pub and Grill in Strand have won the competition for week two and week three. We sent Greg Landman to find out why.

The deal: fish and chips and Carling Black Label draught for R75

Beers out of 5: Value 4; service 5; cold beer 5; vibe 4

The pub: Set right on the beach road in The Strand, Seafarer Pub & Grill has a very comfortable, lived-in feel. Street frontage leads into surprisingly large interior. There are pool tables—two of them—and there are slots for the gamblers. The best seats in the house though, are in the window in the front section, from where you can watch the hoi polloi go by. The road is currently under construction, so it’s best to visit at night when the noise stops.

The food: The beer was cold and delicious and the fish and chips, while not restaurant quality, was more than acceptable for a pub meal. The only gripe was that the batter was a bit dense.) The rest of the menu features a wide range of affordable options, from the Babbelas breakfast, salads, Russians and chips, and nachos, to sandwiches, steak and egg, calamari and chips, burgers, some pizzas.

Value-for-money: R75 for the beer and the fish and chips was very reasonable—pity there was no choice. Service was exceptional—friendly and snappy.
