Hot drinking chocolate

Chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel and thick cream: this decadent hot chocolate recipe should keep you cosy this winter. "This is what I make on a wet, winter’s day after a walk on the misty Sea Point promenade while ducking the spray of the massive waves," says its creator Marlene van der Westhuizen.

Serves: 6 people

Ingredients

800 ml full cream milk
250 g dark, creamy chocolate
2 cinnamon sticks
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp ground nutmeg
wide strip of orange peel
120 ml thick cream

Method

Put the milk, chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and orange peel in a saucepan. Heat the mixture over a low heat, stirring all the time with a small whisk until the chocolate has melted and the chocolate cream is completely smooth and really hot. Remove the cinnamon sticks and the orange peel, and pour the chocolate into small cups. Spoon a dollop of the thick cream on top and sip some immediately!
