Arguably the best burgers in Cape Town. So much effort from the kitchen goes into each individual burger it’s easy to see why Royale is always packed – and with over 50 different burgers to choose from, you are spoilt for choice.

Concise list of mostly everyday wines from R50 per bottle balanced out by some upscale choices; selection by the glass from R20; also good imported beer selection and killer cocktails.

Can be aloof and careless at times but attentive and quick at others.

Sexy and soulful – the downstairs eatery is always packed and walls adorned with hat collections and edgy local artwork, while the kitchen upstairs is romantic, candlelit and whimsical.

Be sure to book ahead if you want to sit upstairs any day of the week – remember to head further up to the Waiting Room for after-burger drinks and easily the best view of Long Street from the balcony. (BS, September 2010)

Took the husband here for burgers (he has notoriously high standards for a patty on a bun). Found the burgers excellent and loved all the different combinations. Tip: don't order fries, the burgers will fill the gap. Promise. You won't be hungry. Nice, cosy atmosphere.
