Food:

Some of the best bistro food in the valley is to be found at this eatery on the square. The pissaladiere tartlet of caramelised onions, olives and anchovy is the king of the starters, while generous mains include a Swartland stew of flaked eisbein or a sirloin served with béarnaise sauce and a cheesy gratin dauphinois. End off with a classic French tarte tatin. There’s also a menu of lighter fare at lunchtime.

Wine:

An impressive selection of mostly local estates, including boutique big-hitters like Sadie Family Vineyards. Only a small selection of house wines by the glass.

Service:

Apron-clad waiters can be mysteriously absent, but when they’re around service is excellent.

Ambience:

The terrace tables have chequered tablecloths and a Francophone soundtrack, driving home the bistro feel in a loveable way.

Look out for the rather hidden chalkboards listing the day’s specials. (RH, October 2011)
