Food:

In operation since 1975, this stalwart’s menu includes starters like prawn cakes, cold asparagus mayonnaise, clams Parreirinha, or chorizo. Apart from seafood options in excess (one could be forgiven for imagining that the Atlantic is just on the other side of the Vaal), there are a range of traditional meat dishes like espetada, steak trinchado and steak a casserola, and good coffee with cannolo for dessert.

Wine:

I enjoy a bottle of Super Bock ale at half-price during their annual birthday special during July. Wine options include Kanonkop Paul Sauer, Rupert & Rothschild or any of a number of Portuguese wines such as Dao Grao Vasco, Alabastro Alentejo, or Periquita.

Service:

The waitrons do a good job of filling tables with huge plates of food and beverages, resulting in happy customers, chatter and fun.

Ambience:

There are various rooms for dining, including a cavernous space with ties hanging from the ceiling. It’s a fun South African/Portuguese restaurant where the wafting smells from the kitchen makes you feel right at home.

And...:

This is the type of establishment where you’ll find an entire table of grey-haired ladies clamouring for prawns at 11.30am. (HF, October 2011)
