Food:

Even though they’re not offered together on the menu, it would be a sin not to request the wonderfully spongy gnocchi with the tender, flavourful ragu. Other winners include the bucatini alla paesana, a thick spaghetti served with Italian pork sausage in a creamy, tomato-based sauce. For dessert, try the air-light profiteroles with creamy custard and warm chocolate sauce, or go the palate-cleansing route and order the trio of fruit sorbets.

Wine:

An impressive collection, even featuring a smattering of Italian tipples. Only a small and pricy selection by the glass.

Service:

Friendly and informative, but can be a bit slow when the place fills up.

Ambience:

This old, renovated double-storey is lovely and cosy thanks to the wooden floors and finishes. Summers are best spent on the vibey stoep.

And...:

If you’re celebrating a special occasion, a vintage from the private cellar should do nicely. (AK, October 2011)
