Food:

Set menus are announced by the owner, Elsabe Zietsman, in a suitably theatrical manner. Starts may be fresh sweetcorn and ginger soup served piping hot with baby shrimp, followed by pasta with homemade pesto, flash-fried cocktail tomatoes and pecorino. A Malibu and pawpaw granita palate cleanser is sheer brilliance. Main courses are served buffet style, and may include decadently juicy free-range chicken and sirloin and rump pie. Apple and caramel sponge cake with lemon syrup for dessert is heavenly.

Wine:

Bring your own. Alternatively, you might have to beg a drop of chef Agnes Mabaso who uses Diemersfontein and sherry in her killer lamb knuckle stew.

Service:

The ladies that cook, clean and sing also wait suavely on the tables. Take a stroll through the neighbouring park, which is funded and maintained by this delightful group of people with huge hearts.

Ambience:

This is a gem of a restaurant, perched high on the Auckland Park hills under the Brixton tower, offers entertainment, food, views, heart-warming care and compassion for humanity. You feel like royalty dining in a glass box. Live entertainment, provided by Elzabé Zietsman herself or talented pianist Rocco de Villiers, is an incomparable highlight.

And...:

Zietsman also founded the ‘Doilie Club’ to fund the tuition of young aspiring musicians and actors, so you’ll be supporting not only a great restaurant, but also a good cause. (HF, October 2011)
