Madre's Kitchen

A blackboard menu of daily specials shows off the best of Madre Malan’s kitchen, but it’s the home-baked goodies that draw day-trippers from far and wide. Expect a delectable range of freshly baked quiches and generous sandwiches, or perhaps a platter of local pâté and cheese to go with the warm bread from the clay oven outside. You shouldn’t leave without trying one of her famous bakes for dessert; the cheesecake is excellent.

Can be a bit hit-and-miss, but it’s a laid-back environment so nobody worries too much.

Enjoy the charming cottage space indoors, or grab a table on the lawns where there’s a jungle gym to keep kids entertained.

In the deli you’ll find delicious olives, jams and fresh farm produce to take home with you. (RH, October 2011)

We joined Madre for a celebration of herbs on the first weekend of December and what a celebration it was! Herb infused butter melted on hunks of warm bread. Vine leaf wrapped Camembert oozed onto the cheese board. Platters piled with cured meats, cheeses, salads, strawberries and cherries made our mouths water. We lounged on huge cushions replete after the meal, sipping on cappuccinos and nibbling on wheat free chocolate brownies, meringues and shortbread. I can't wait to go back.
