Food
With its authentic Indian food, down to indigenous vegetables like bhindi (okra) and karela (bitter melon), this restaurant caters mainly to the local Indian community. The food, served village-style over bainsmarie, is as close as you can get to Ma’s kitchen.
Wine
The establishment is run as a non-profit organisation by devotees of the Swami Narayana group and no alcohol is served. A traditional chai or yogurt lassi will complete any meal.
Service
The staff is mainly Hindi or Gujarati-speaking and if you’re a Westerner, you may feel like something of an oddity, cocooned in this extension to Johannesburg’s India-town. However, frequent patrons will be given a warm welcome and made to feel part of the family.
Ambience
This is a simple eatery, with only the light essence of incense and mystic music dressing up the basic wooden furniture and plastic tablecloths, but it is spotlessly clean and with no aspirations to sophistication.

A real find. (AK
