Having eaten there a few times and enjoyed it I went on a hot summers day for lunch - hoping for a yum salad only to find that not had they run out of tuna but they had no avocado for their salads!

With Spar down the escalator and Pick n Pay across the road, I think the management could have bought some without us even being aware! Instead we had a very disappointing meal and should have left when we discovered the reduced choices.

Eating lunch at Viola in Cape Town should have been a decent experience - not to be! My friend and I both wanted to order the Chicken Quasedillas, but were told that they were out of avocado. I looked at my friend and said "But there's a Spar downstairs. All they need to do is run down and grab a few. Problem solved." We then chatted to the manager who, although could see an easy solution to the problem, refused to pay Spar prices for Avo. She was rude and seemed to put a barrier up when we suggested the solution. She was having none of it.We were given feta on our side salad as compensation for the lack of Avo. Seriously? Feta!

It astounds me that when a solution is so easily apparent yet managers refuse to spend time and a few rands (which they easily make up in the mark up of the rest of the food) to satisfy a customer. I know managers of other restaurants who would do anything to satisfy their clientele, regardless of a few rands. We were not offered a free coffee or slice of cake in an attempt to apologise for the lack of Avo. I mean if it's on the menu, do your best to serve it! It was a seriously unpleasant experience and the last time I will be dining there.

Comment well put. If we run out of ripe avo (and trust me it's a tricky game, one buys lots of avo to ripen and the demand slumps) I have even run to woolies and payed the premium for ready to eat just so as not to be in a position of saying sorry we dont have. I tell my staff we must never be in that situation - and yes a complimentary drink or whatever for an unavoidable situation goes the mile.

Matt, get a grip! You are behaving like a child who didn’t get his way! If a restaurant plays open cards with their customers and offers an alternative, you have no right to complain and / or dictate how they should run their operation. Have you ever considered that avocados are not in season, and imported avocado cost up to three times the price? Part of a successful restaurant is cost control, and in the difficult financial climate anyone and everyone should be keeping a firm hand on expenses. Hats off to Voila! for standing their ground! The customer isn’t always right!

Lovely decor and background music but food could do with a little more attention. My poached egg came out medium and the rocket was not as fresh as I would have liked. The service was tense as the manager was arguing with his waiters and I noticed a few customers complain. My plate came chipped and when I asked about it I was told that most of the plates looked like that. Think they should treat the customers better as well as the staff - this would result in a more relaxed dining experience.

We have enjoyed really good breakfasts here: eggs in all shapes are delicious, bread is good, and there’s a great selection of tea and good coffees.
