2 Thai 4 (Illovo)  (Johannesburg, Illovo)
Susan Vorster
9-Mar-2010
I had an awesome evening on Saturday night at 2 Thai 4. It was really nice not to be in a shopping centre and to have good service and good food. I could taste the purity of the ingredients and the food is exactlyhow they do it in Thailand. Lynn and Brian, well done!
The Greenhouse (Cape Town, Constantia)

Some fab meals, others too clever and did not work.
The floor service was shocking, and the wine service was of poor.

Not in my top 10.
Aubergine and Andreotti's  (Durban, Hillcrest)

My wife and I ate here on Friday night on the recommendation of some Joburg friends who own a home in Hillcrest (we've just moved to Durban) and it was fantastic. From the super friendly greeting at the door to the really warm service ( the food's delicious as well !) we were made to feel like locals. It's not cheap, but if it's always as busy, they treat you so well and the food is as great as it was then it's worth every cent. I can't wait to go back.

Chai Yo is superb! One of my new favourite places in the nothern suburbs. Fantastic food, especially their sushi and cocktails. With an awesome vibe and location along the canal to top it off. Definitely worth the weekly return!

Went to Chai Yo after work for the half price cocktail and sushi special (16h00 - 18h00 daily) and sat on the deck on the edge of the canal. It was absolutely stunning, the staff were very helpful and efficient, the cocktails were amazing and the sushi was delicious! I would definitely recommend it and will most certainly go back again!
Bayleaf & Sage  (Johannesburg)
Tennille
8-Mar-2010
Bayleaf and Sage has managed to do what few others can, and be consistently good. We went again for breakfast yesterday morning, and as usual the place was packed. I had the freshest, loveliest watermelon juice with loads of wonderful cappucino's and a hearty breakfast. It's the kind of place you can spend an entire day in.
Cumin and Coriander  (Johannesburg)

I feel the need to tell the whole world about my super discovery in Queen Street, Kensington named “Cumin and Coriander” which fits the street location 100% as their food is definitely fit for royalty. The only negative to this restaurant is the addiction I have for their food and friendly service. Based on North Indian Cuisine this restaurant has quickly become my favorite place to eat in Johannesburg.

I have sampled most of the rich, colourful and spicy delights on the menu and I am yet to find a dish that I am not 100% satisfied with. The delightful aromas that tease your nose as the food arrives is not even a sign of what is to come as you fill your mouth with the first fork. This sensation of textures and flavours is evident
In your mouth until the last bit of Naan bread that I used to wipe up the very last drop of sauce on my plate time and time again.

The management team, Bonnie and Ziad who are well-known from their days at “The Tent” (an awesome restaurant that was in Randburg) have made my every visit perfect with their friendly smiles and that little extra time to have a chat and find out how things are going etc. This positive and friendly attitude is visible in their helpful and well trained waiters who are also full of smiles. Even the chef, george has such a positive attitude by coming around after the meal to enquire how his creation suited your palate. Truly friendly and well-informed staff are under the super guidance of the superb management.

The décor in the restaurant is simple yet effective with a clean look to it with hints of Indian culture visible around you by well-placed statues and books at the front end of the restaurant which is the non-smoking area. There is an earthly tranquil garden setting outside as the smoking section which happens to be my favourite part of the restaurant. All in all a well balanced décor which doesn’t leave a person feeling uncomfortable and overwhelmed.

I have been to Cumin and Coriander a couple of times now and the food is fantastic, the service is superb and the value for money is so unexpected after the unreal experience.
I have nothing but praise for the friendly staff and the food which they serve. A job well done and they merit much more than all the kind words I have written about them today.

I had a great time on Friday night, after walking out of Ami. Maybe we got Jeff on a good night (compared to other reviews on this website), as he was super friendly and well-mannered! The waiters are superbly trained and the service was outstanding, a rarity in South African restaurants these days. The calamari was out of this world, the lamb and duck mains were excellent. Great place, will be back for sure!
Ami Restaurant & Champagne bar  (Johannesburg, Craighall Park)

I booked last Tuesday for a birthday dinner on Friday night. I then confirmed the booking during the day on Friday, and all appeared to be in order. Upon arrival Friday night it became clear there was a private function at Ami, all the tables were moved outside. We were ushered to a cocktail table inside and were expected to eat our meal there. No mention of this was made during booking conversations. The ambience was zero, with no other sit down tables in sight. We were then told there was no menu, only snack platter of ciabatta, chicken skewers and something else... The manager (Monty) gave super attitude, and was extremely unapologetic and happy to blame the other manager, Tiann. We decided to leave and will not go back! It was extremely unprofessional and disappointing!
Alive Alive Oh The Shellfish Bar  (Kleinmond)

In October last year the owners of the Shellfish bar employed a new general manager. This friendly, courteous young man has really made a difference. The staff are well-trained and the service has improved. The ablution facilites have been cleaned up, however, it would be great if the number of toilets could be increased. I have recommended the Shellfish Bar to friends and family. Those who have eaten there have enjoyed the experience.

What a fantastic meal. Our waitress was friendly and passionate about what she does and she was really happy to advise on dishes and was very knowledgeable. The appetisers were quick and delicious- we ordered more half way through and they were quick to come too. The main course was a bit slow but it was busy and they apologised, and we hadn't really noticed the wait. The duck was fantastic, though the Korean beef was a bit more subtle in flavour, so it wasn't as good but might have been because of the combination that we ordered to share! The prices were not too bad either. The portions were a very decent size.
We would definitely recommend and would happily go back.
The Grand (Granger Bay)  (Cape Town)

I visited this venue Sunday, 7 March at 5pm, we made reservations.
The waiter named Johan, was arrogant and rude. The hostess was informed but failed to render an apology.
At no time was a manager present, an apology from Aneesh thats all.
Disgusting service I tell you. I hope this restaurant closes ASAP, they represent South Africa in a very negative light.
I will make a public notice about this horrid venue.
Anybody looking for an excellent restaurant should visit, il Leone in greenpoint they definitely made up for the bad evening wasted at The Grand.
The Restaurant at Jordan  (Stellenbosch)

Whatever service problems there may have been here, none were in evidence on a visit this Sunday lunch time. This is not the place for a quick in and out meal - relax, enjoy the surroundings and views and just have another glass of wine!

Relaxed and friendly, unrushed but attentive and charming service, a great adddition to winelands eating - a wonderful menu and at R225 for 3 courses which for the quality of the food is excellent value. I would have been happy to choose any of the items offered. Flavours are clean fresh and exciting - the salt and sugar curred trout, sesame fried prawn and summer flowers was a great starter - simple but harmonious and so full of flavour - the summer flowers in particular a highlight! The braised kingklip with porcini, new potatoes and organic baby leeks (and a little spinach) was perfect - stunningly fresh fish perfectly cooked and beautifully complemented by the other ingredients. To finish a dark chocolate terrine with vanilla ice cream - both great but even these were surpassed by the stunning raspberries the like of which I have not tasted in South Africa.

Adjoining tables had crayfish with risotto and the chargrilled rib-eye with bearnaise and rocket looked equally divine! A return visit is certain!
Jakes on Summerley  (Cape Town, Kenilworth)

I ate at Jakes on Summerly last week and didn't experience the Jakes of old. The restaurant has sadly gone from destination duck to destination disappointing. The service was average (although, come to think of it - it hasn't ever been particularly impressive), the twice-cooked special, so special it doesn't appear on any menu was well below standard and it appeared that the one and only credit card machine works on a hierarchy basis of how long the waiter has worked at the restaurant...
Salt (Cape Town, Bantry Bay)

We've visited Salt, again, in mid February this year. We always had a wonderful time there and good honest food, not the best of service though, but the view and the food made up for it. This time I was outraged! The portions were considerably shrinking, the service was intolerable and unacceptable, no butter with the bread and we had to practically beg in order to get some bread, not even the water was served before being presented with the menu. I'm just surprised how this place still has guests eating there. I work in the industry, on a management level, and I hate to complain and give a hard time to restaurant staff, but when receiving such a bad service what else can I do? None of the managers, including the GM - Gidi or the newly appointed chef seemed to mind that the service is rushed, when we specifically requested more time between courses as we were celebrating an important event in our life. The main course was brought 2 minutes after we finished our soup, which was brought when we were still eating our starter! As a highlight of the meal, the meat was overcooked, from the rare requested to almost well done, further more, everything on the plate seemed just thrown together with no passion or interest, big disappointment, especially since the food was served cold - although the service was rushed. And it was absolutely tasteless, I sent it back but wasn't offered other alternatives, just asked for the bill and went away, again, nobody seemed to worry or mind that a guest is walking out of their place. Never really heard of this new "superstar" chef of theirs - JACQUES DE JAGER, and I believe that they should just take back whatever award or accolades he gained (had to google him, to see what he's all about). Too much fuss about nothing. His top 10 rating at the moment doesn't reflect in the quality of his cooking - if he even remembers how to cook anymore...... Salt Restaurant is out of my books for good, and because I'm working in the industry, for a leading hotel, I'll make sure not to recommend it to any of my guests. Very, very, very disappointing, no direction, no vision, just not appealing anymore.
