Hudsons Burger Joint (City Bowl, Cape Town) Maggie Mostert 18-Jun-2010 Go to Hudsons for authentic American burgers. The range is just large enough and you can choose from 2 patty sizes (125g/250g). Do order the onion rings. Avoid the chips - thin and tasteless. Service is friendly and fast. Drinks menu interesting (have an Arnold Palmer). Wine list needs some inspiration but then again you don't really go to a burger joint to drink wine. The atmosphere is loud and bustling and the music (old fashioned fifties) was loud but had our feet tapping.
Hudsons Burger Joint (City Bowl, Cape Town) David Stuart 12-Oct-2009 After much talk and hype we were really keen to try out the Hudson's on Kloof Street. We arrived for lunch and the place was busy with tourists but not over run and we managed to get a good table outside. After we sat down it took a while for a waitress to ask us for our drinks order... and then we waited almost 25 mins for our drinks, after having to ask twice and each time we were told "they are on the way"...
The food itself was sadly well below average at the best. We had a peri-peri chicken, a bacon, avo and feta, and a brie and cranberry burger. We suspected we may wait a little for our food after the 'delayed' drinks - 1hr10mins later out food arrived and wow, what a disappointment! The chicken burger was a fillet in a roll with some basting sauce slapped on top, the avo had just been dropped on the top of patty and the single strip of fatty bacon wasn't even on the burger (it had 'fallen off ' and was just on the plate). The burgers were dry and charred on the edges and the chips seemed to have been deep fried more than once... Food aside, the service was just shocking and inexcusable and the waitresses just seemed to be all over the place.
The concept and decor is great but the food is well below average for a burger joint (all you need to do is be good at burgers and 'freshly cut' fries - it can't be that hard)... and the service has got to be the worst I have experienced in Cape Town in a long while, and we all eat out a frequently...
Its a shame as its good concept on a cool street but it just doesn't cut it. I would strongly recommend going to Cafe Royale for a burger on Long Street - servcie and food is a lot better. Caprice has great burgers too and can't believe the same guys own Hudson's and have no idea how badly its being run!
Hudsons Burger Joint (City Bowl, Cape Town) Dale Kushner 3-Oct-2009 I have been trying to get to Hudson for a while as I love the burgers at Caprice and believe that the same people own it. I have heard rave reviews including the ones on this website. I have to say that my experience there was hardly satisfying! It was actually horrendous! When we arrived, there was definitely a great busy vibe happening, but the grill smoke that filled the entire restaurant due to problems with their extractor fan soon overrode it. After waiting at the bar for a drink, which took a while to arrive, we eventually got a table. But the smoke was overbearing so we finally moved to an outside table that opened up. We ordered buffalo chicken wings and chili poppers as a starter as they boasted that their buffalo wings were the real McCoy. We also ordered two burgers. As I live in the USA half the year was keen to find a place in South Africa that can really do buffalo wings properly. After waiting another 40 minutes we eventually asked one of the waitresses (as ours was hardly around - probably due to the overwhelming amount of people in the small restaurant,) to check on our food.
The manager then brought our burgers and explained that there was a delay with the chicken wings as they ran out and have to defrost some more which would take another 20 minutes! Not what I wanted to hear! So we passed on the wings. The chili poppers were a big ball of fried dough and not appetizing at all. The burgers were ok although the ones at Caprice are still superior. The fries were the tastiest part of the meal! At this point we were truly disappointed and just wanted to leave, so asked for the bill. When it came they had credit card problems. After about 30 more minutes they asked us to walk to a nearby hotel so that they could run the credit card machine over there. They did not even offer us a drink for all the constant problems we experienced. It's just so disappointing when a great new place opens and they don't run it with proper customer satisfaction in mind. I hope that it improves in service, as it’s a great little place with lots of potential.
Hudsons Burger Joint (City Bowl, Cape Town) Anja Carstens 26-Aug-2009 My new favourite restaurant! They're spot on with their hamburgers (my favourite: The Cheese!) and the atmosphere is really relaxed and laid back. Go there early or book a table to avoid disappointment. (The restaurant fills up really fast). Also don't forget to order some chilli poppers!
Hudsons Burger Joint (City Bowl, Cape Town) Andrea 21-Aug-2009 Great atmosphere with loads of options - bar, outside or inside. Staff were very friendly - we were served by the bartender who was great.
Fun menu - really liked the fact that the burgers come in different sizes. However, the burger patty was a bit dry and there was definitely not enough cheese on my cheese burger! Buns were also a little on the flat side... Loved the salad that came with my burger though! Chilli poppers could have been a bit more crispy...
