Borage Bistro

At first glance, Borage Bistro looks like the kind of place only frequented by corporate types looking for a quick, but interesting, bite for breakfast or lunch. And its position on the ground floor of the towering new Portside building makes it perfectly suited to just that type to customer. But last night, I attended one of their end-of-the-month supper clubs - and it's already climbing up my list of spots to hang out for a good dinner while avoiding the dense rush-hour Southern Suburbs traffic. The supper club is held on the last Tuesday of the month and for a very reasonable R140 pp you get three good courses, chatter with the strangers alongside you at a shared long table, and a limited but good selection of drinks. The theme changes from month to month, and for June's dinner, the kitchen at Borage dished up a trio of British pub grub: delectably soft fish and mushy peas to start, an okay beef pie (this was the only element that disappointed) and buttery, buttery mash for mains, and an incredibly tasty treacle tart for dessert. But best of all was the warm, relaxed vibe on a chilly winter's night. I almost didn't want to leave. And I'll certainly be back.
