Hudsons – The Burger Joint

Gourmet burgers might be old news, especially on Cape Town’s busy restaurant scene, but Hudsons on Kloof is a solid reminder of why it will never go out of fashion. This small flagship store of the small chain of burger joints makes damn fine burgers – it’s easy to see and taste why it’s always packed.

The burgers and sides are substantial, so it’s probably only the really hungry that will go for starters. On offer are pulled pork tacos, crumbed chicken strips, crumbed mushrooms, salmon crostini and phenomenal chilli poppers (generous in both size and stuffing, with the three-cheese filling oozing out after each bite). You might follow that with BBQ beef ribs, chicken wings, rustic nachos or a salad, but you’re probably here for the burgers.

Said flavour bombs are made from scratch on site, and include beef, ostrich, chicken and veggie versions, as well as a pretty fine gluten-free roll option. Topping and flavor combinations are interesting and deeply delicious. The two menu stars are The Original Royale (beef patty topped with bacon, cheddar, chilli and battered onion rings) and the Player (beef topped with streaky bacon, feta and perfectly-ripe avo). Complement them with any of the yummy sides, especially the disco fries – skinny fries with melted mozzarella, cheddar, creamy peri peri sauce and spring onions – or the famous Liberty slaw: cabbage, carrots, feta, cucumber, red kidney beans, chickpeas, sweet corn and red onion with a honey mustard dressing.

Dessert consists of three highly shareable options: Belgian waffles, chocolate brownies and deep-fried Oreos (yes, really).

Great burgers demand great beer, and with the plethora of local craft beers, you’re spoilt for choice. If you’re going for the American diner experience, opt for milkshake. They’re outstanding, and cover all the standard flavours, as well as peanut butter, salted caramel, Horlicks and honey, and Lindt brownie.

Super swift and perfectly, non-annoyingly friendly. They don’t do bookings, but the turnover is quick, so you will never wait too long.

The vibe is laid-back but energetic, mostly because of the great soundtrack. With burgers this good, you won’t really notice the interior (which is cool) or the fact that you are sitting outside on a wooden bench.

Keep an eye out for the burger-of-the-month and (craft) beer-of-the-month specials – both are innovative and delicious.
