I grew up in Cape Town and from the age of 14, I was a waitress. When I studied, I was a bartender. Being in the service industry, ruined dining out for me for life because I expected the same service that I gave. I depended on tips and although I may not have always been amazing, I strived to be great. Now, I work on a cruise ship where there is no escape from the customer. When I return to Cape Town with pounds in my pocket, I really just want to enjoy everything I miss about the city I love. This was not the case on my last visit home. Coming up to my final week before returning to my cruise ship, I wanted to have a great (tried and tested) meal out with my bestie. The steak I had was amazing as always but the service…well that was something that I am not used to at a place I frequent. The waiter did not bother to replace our cutlery after our starter for when our main arrived or top up our drinks when they were running low. We ordered Prosecco and as an ex-waiter, I would’ve asked if we were celebrating anything (which we were. Tuesday is a reason to celebrate!) but not only that, when another waiter topped up our prosecco, he finished the bottle and then proceeded to leave the empty bottle in the ice bucket on our table. Our bill came to R700 and we split it and left R150 tip. Not only did he not thank us, but he was very dismissive of us completely. Thank God your food redeems you, Kloof Street House.
