Lunching at Live Bait is like enjoying a meal inside a seashell. As waves crash close by, enjoy mouthfuls of fresh seafood at this sleek seaside eatery.
To start, we share a plate of black West Coast mussels, which is served to us in a garlic white-wine cream sauce. You could start adventurously with sushi before progressing to the sardines salsa verde off the coals. Or order the grilled calamari as a main, stylishly served with olive oil, garlic, aioli, chilli salsa verde and chips.
For dessert, spoil yourself with a slice of cheesecake with ice cream, or a tri of sorbets that includes lemon, orange and passion fruit, served on a pineapple Carpaccio with pineapple, lime and salsa.
The Harbour House Group has distilled trendy wine lists into a fine art. Live Bait – in its prime Muizenberg position – features various bubbly options, such as Steenberg MCC. A range of white and red wines are available, and soft drinks and cocktails are also on offer.
Muizenberg is cool. The surfers wafting into Live Bait are cool and the service is equally sleek.
Live Bait is beautifully decorated. The room is a mesh of white, blush sand, stone and wood. With large, ceiling-high windows, the restaurant invites the ocean in. Enjoy a cool glass of wine while gazing at Muizenberg’s colourful beach huts, or drink in the ocean at a table overlooking the Atlantic ocean. Live Bait provides you with a scenic invitation to fall in love with the ocean.
Parking is ample, but you have to compete with surfers in the afternoon and on weekends. Still, everyone you run into is friendly and relaxed, so the only thing you might have to contend with is how many times you will repeat the phrase, “No, you go first, I insist.”
