How to win at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries

The top-rated reader reviewed restaurants will be recognised later this year at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries. Separate to our fine-dining-based awards, this set of awards is designed to recognise the neighbourhood gems, small ethnic restaurants and local favourites.

Eat Out fans directly influence the results with their star ratings when they review a restaurant on the site. Stars are awarded from one (poor) to five (excellent), for food and drinks, ambience and service. The restaurants with the highest average star rating in each category in each province for the period are eligible to win. As of 2017, each shortlisted restaurant will be visited and rated by an Eat Out critic. Final scores will be based on a 50-50 composite rating determined by the public and the critics.

For obvious reasons, restaurants are not permitted to review their own – or others’ – establishments. Spot checks will be conducted, and restaurants disqualified, if they are found doing so. Read more about the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries.

Terms and conditions

  • The Best Everyday Eateries winners will be determined by a restaurant’s average star rating over the eligible period, with equal weighting given to reader reviews and critic reviews.
  • Eat Out will combine the star ratings of the reader reviews over the eligible period with those of the critics on the Eat Out editorial panel to get to an average score out of 5 for each restaurant. (There will be equal weighting for the reader reviews and the critic’s reviews, i.e. a 50/50 split.)
  • In the instance that a restaurant receives multiple positive reader reviews but has not been rated by a critic, a critic will be commissioned to review and rate the restaurant. An average score will then be determined.
  • In the instance that a restaurant does not receive enough reader reviews to qualify to win but has a high star rating from the critic, a ‘highly commended’ award will be given.
  • The awards period is 1 October 2016 to 31 August 2017.
  • Users need to be logged in to review and rate a restaurant.
  • Restaurants need to be listed on eatout.co.za to receive reviews and ratings. If your restaurant is not listed, please click here.
  • Individual restaurants need to have received a minimum of five reviews in the awards period to qualify to win.
  • A prize will not be awarded if the highest-rated restaurant in that category has an overall rating lower than four stars.
  • Ratings are done based on ambience, service, and food, in a 20:20:60 ratio to give precedence to food.
  • Users may review and rate as many restaurants as they’d like, but only one review per user profile per restaurant will be tallied.
  • A restaurant’s staff members may not review their own restaurant. Spot checks will be carried out and offenders will be disqualified.
  • The results will be audited based on the above guidelines.
  • In the event of a ratings tie, written reviews will be taken into consideration.
  • The auditors’ findings are final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the winners.
  • Eat Out reserves the right to place restaurants in the most relevant category.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries again be chosen and announced separately from the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards?

Yes. This year, the Eat Out community will nominate the winners of the Best Everyday Eateries by writing a review and rating a restaurant on the Eat Out website. In each of the categories for each province, the qualifying restaurants with the highest average star ratings between 1 October 2016 and 31 August 2017 will be taken into consideration. Eat Out panel members then have until the end of September to review any restaurants that have received multiple reader reviews but have not been reviewed by an Eat Out reviewer recently. The winners will then be determined at the end of September by combining the star ratings of the reader reviews over the eligible period with those of the critics on the Eat Out editorial panel to get to an average score out of 5 for each restaurant. There will be equal weighting for the reader reviews on one hand and the Eat Out critic’s review on the other, i.e. a 50/50 split. The winners will be announced at two successive events in October – one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town.

Which regions’ winners will be announced at the Best Everyday Eatery event in Johannesburg?

  • Free State
  • KwaZulu-Natal
  • Mpumalanga

Why is there no Durban-based Best Everyday Eatery event?

Eat Out will certainly look at a stand-alone event in KwaZulu-Natal in future, if there is demand. For now, the KZN honours will be announced at the event in Johannesburg.

What if there aren’t winners for all the categories in each of the nine provinces?

Because of the strict criteria, not all the categories will have winners that receive enough reader reviews and high enough star ratings to warrant the top prize. Individual restaurants need to have received a minimum of five reviews in the awards period to qualify to win. A winner will not be announced if the highest-rated restaurant in that category has an overall rating lower than four stars. Individual restaurants need to have been reviewed by a critic in order to win. In the instance that a restaurant does not receive enough reader reviews but has a high rating from a critic, a ‘highly commended’ may be awarded.

How can restaurants ensure that they are listed on the Eat Out website to be reviewed for the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries?

Restaurants can list their establishments at eatout.co.za/venue-register/ or contact the Eat Out listings team at info@eatout.co.za.

Stop Hunger Now SA

Established in the USA in 1998, Stop Hunger Now (SHN) is an international organisation that co-ordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHN SA) was established in Johannesburg in 2009, with a Cape Town office opening in 2011. SHN SA offers a social investment opportunity to provide fully balanced nutritional meals for pre-school children. Their mission is to end hunger by focusing on transformation through education. A SHN SA meal is completely nutritionally balanced, with an enrichment supplement of 21 vitamins and minerals specifically formulated to combat malnutrition. The packaging makes the product safe to store for 12 months. The meals are easy to prepare, requiring only water and 20 to 30 minutes of cooking time using electricity, gas or wood. SHN SA distributes meals to early childhood development (ECD) centres, primary and high schools, and universities. Prospective recipients must meet certain criteria: i.e. they must be under-resourced and have both the will and initiative to commit to achieving goals (drawn up in an evaluation process). Based on successful monitoring and evaluation results, support may be renewed. SHN SA meals are about giving a hand-up and not a hand-out: success is achieved by empowering the ECD centres to secure their own sustainability. The programme does not foster dependency but empowers the centres.
