The Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award acknowledges a restaurant that brings its customers seasonal, local and responsibly produced food, helping the country to move towards a more sustainable food system. In 2016, we announced the first-ever winner, The Table at De Meye in Stellenbosch.
“This is an award I have wanted to introduce for a long time,” said Abigail Donnelly. “We recognise that achieving sustainability is an ongoing process, but we want to showcase restaurants that are making great strides to promote good practices.”
Eat Out works with several partners to develop robust criteria, covering all aspects of the business, including responsible sourcing, responsible farming, ethical treatment and slaughter of animals, fair labour practices, community impact and energy, water and waste management. The judges include Eat Out chief judge Abigail Donnelly, Pavitray Pillay of WWF-SASSI, Fairtrade South Africa, Sonia Mountford of Eategrity and Karen Welter of Longtable Project.
Entries for the 2017 award will open on 2 May.
