Food
The American-themed menu is massive. There is everything from bagels and chowder to smoked meats and gourmet dogs. Initial excitement makes way for mixed emotions, however, as the food has some great hits and some sad misses.

The hits: Look forward to delicious flavours that leave you wanting more. Chilli poppers are done American-style, with crumbed cheese containing bites of jalapeño peppers, served simply with a refreshing ranch dip. The Cajun fish is lovely, beautifully cooked and zesty, and comes with a nicely spiced savoury rice. The Coney Island dog is everything I look for in a hotdog. A classic Frank sausage is served in a pretzel roll that’s slathered in ketchup, chopped red onions, mustard and grated cheese. Scrumptious. Also yummy is the po’boy sandwich with its filling of crumbed, beautifully cooked prawns. Desserts please, too, offering the likes of gourmet shakes and warm blueberry pie with hints of spicy cinnamon.

The misses: While flavours are great, there are sadly some let-downs. Our skinny fries, served in quirky tin cups with checked paper, are lukewarm, with a slightly stale texture. The Cajun hake and rice, although tasty, are also lacking in temperature.

This beautifully styled restaurant has so much promise, but has a bit of work to do when it comes to executing its exciting menu. This isn’t to say I won’t be back – those gourmet dogs and prawns were true winners.

Drinks
1904 Bistro Américain doesn’t have liquor licence yet, so take your own tipple along. The gorgeous bar looks as though it will soon have ample craft beers on tap and gins, so look forward to that. Alternatively, there is a monumental number of freakshakes, floats and juices from which to choose. As for coffee, you’ll get a decent cup of Douwe Egberts here.

Service
The restaurant is only a few weeks old, and it shows in terms of the service. While the waiters are friendly and eager to please, there is still a bit to learn – as expected with many new establishments. The managers are present, but do not seem to check in on many tables. The extensive menu may also be leading to time issues in the kitchen.

Ambience
This place is gorgeous. The blush pinks, green plants and rose-gold touches work beautifully with the marble bar and velvet and leather seating. If it’s a warmer day, find a seat outside in the undercover area. 1904 Bistro Américain is truly a well-designed space that’s a breath of fresh air for the area.

And…
This spot is extremely child-friendly. You’ll find high chairs, an extensive and tasty-sounding kids’ menu, and glorious freakshakes to keep the little ones happy.

  • As soon as I saw the menu I was SO excited, it's all the America without the Trump. We ordered the Rocky Road milkshake and the Cookies and Cream. The Rocky Road was alright, but the Cookies and Cream did not disappoint! It had good chunks of chocolate in it, which tasted like chocolate that you get in those cup ice creams- from when we were younger. For lunch, we ordered the Po' boy, Philly Cheese Steak, Pulled Pork Bun and Cheesy Chilly Fries (We were excited, okay!). We were also going to order the Cuban sandwich but the menu said that it contained corned beef, however, the sandwich traditionally has ham. Interesting to find out why the substitution. The Po' boy was delicious, crispy prawns and the fresh tomatoes and lettuce go really well with it. The slight hint of spiciness in the sauce (or in the crumbed prawns?) was definitely needed and added a bit of kick. The Philly Cheese Steak was meh. It lacked basic seasoning and needed something extra, caramelized onions maybe? The Pulled Pork Bun was AMAZING. It's everything you wish for when you think of pulled pork. Unlike other places, it's not too saucy or too sweet either, and you get some of that char on the meat from the grill. I've read some poor reviews about the staff etc on some other websites, but I have to say that the waiters were very friendly, attentive and knew the menu well. In fact, the waiter recommended the Cookies and Cream Milkshake which turned out to be a really good choice.

  • A stratosphere above other the usual steakhouses and very well priced. Things ran very smoothly for a restaurant only a few weeks old. Steaks were awesome, we will be back for the burgers, they looked awesome from our table. #OtherOrderEnvy

  • What an amazing experience we had yesterday at 1904. Great service, friendly staff and by far the best lamb shank EVER. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who would like American style cuisine. Definitely adds value to the Kloof area. My son loved the burgers and amazing shake. Thank you for the great service, we will most definitely be back!

  • After much anticipation and planning - a bookclub night out was planned to 1904 Bistro Americain. We were left disappointed. Firstly we were not informed that there was no drinks license. Then had to wait 15 minutes for a waiter to assist. When one was eventually flagged down he tried his level best but was ill equipped and clueless what was there flag ship dish. No ice bucket available for the purchased wine (thanks Woolworths!) and just a general lack lustre feeling from all the staff encountered. The food on the expensive side. Kiddies Mac and Cheese R65! Hoping things would improve - alas the food arrived after a 50 minute wait. One expected it to be warm but all 5 dishes were cold, and just lacking in flavour. Lets hope that with time and training things will improve!
