Bukhara specializes in various methods of Indian cooking, all with a slant to north Indian origins. Succulent meats cooked in the charcoal tandoor and aromatic curries continue to delight palates in Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Johannesburg.

  • My summary of the event is as follows: 1 – When we arrive (the table were booked many day before hand and Niki also informed your contact that these are high level guests) the tables were not set and laid out properly, the height of the tables were uneven, there were no preparations done, it was just bare basic tables with nothing on it. 2 – there were one waitress, unable to really handle a group of this size. She was inexperienced, lacking all the skills for a high class restaurant. 3 – There was not sufficient menus, the menus were dirty, stained and greasy when handling it. You need to replace these old ones. 4 – The service of wine, water and fruit juice was a disaster that needed continuous reminding the waitress that the fruit juice is still not here, no water after even 40 minutes of being seated. 5 – The taking of the orders were random, not detailed and really not what was expected. 6 – While waiting for quite a while the food appeared at a random rate, what was ordered did not arrived at the correct person, on the end the food was mostly placed in the middle of the tables and we have joined an almost Tapas way of eating. 7 – For our Muslim guests this was mostly unacceptable due to they not wanting to eat with us out the same bowls!! We have settled between us and steered the situation away by really controlling the food structure. 8 – The food served was done in such an improper way that even I felt ashamed of what happened. 9 – The serviettes was only brought to the table in heaps on the one end when we have requested numerous times for serviettes. We had to hand this out through the guests. 10 – The bread was only brought after we have requested numerous times for the bread, it was placed very unceremoniously on the table and it was just not good. 11 – The food was mostly sent back in heaps due to the rations of rice relative to other being by far too much. 12 – Most food 80% were returned due to the “middle of the table” crisis. 13 – When ordering the desert, the same chaos occurred. 14 – Everyone had to accept what was handed out, two dishes arrived that was not ordered I paid the account of R4500 with a 10% tip included due to me not wanting to make a fool out myself. You need to come back to me please. I feel that we have really wasted an opportunity to impress our clients with a decent restaurant, service and food. For Stellenbosch, this is just not good enough.

  • If i havent died by the time someone sees this it will be recorded in the Guiness book of world records on 16 august 2014 for the most remarkable human recovery of all time. I ordered a takeaway today from Bukhara and via phone call was greeted by the barman there, who by now I am absolutely convinced was either making an attempt on my life or having me on, furthermore having limited to zero Indian food knowledge (or knowledge of anything for that matter) gave me his personal advise and guarantee after I enquired into a curry that was EXTRA MILD, creamy, coconut and tomato based. He suggests a thing called Lamb MADRAS, which apparently now is an Indian acronym for "run away, get away, and hide from this nuclear scientific experiment that Ghandi himself believes is solely responsible for all the heat, fire and combustion generated in the galaxy by everything...ever". After selling me this thing that he compared to a BUTTER CHICKEN sauce, a 20 minute discussion with his co-worker ensued about the difference between a roti and naan bread. After the most complicated explanation I have ever heard about texture and grains, I could have re-written the entire food encyclopedia on East indian bread content. I will also note that after arriving and paying for the most expensive Curry in the known cosmos, I was told the basmati rice was an extra cost. Upon return and opening the container, which packed enough heat to substitute a minor volcanic eruption, the colour was far from the butter chicken “orange” comparison. It was dark and decrepit. The fumes hit my face like a thermal gas explosion. My nostrils singed on the inside immediately and I let out a small yell. Stupidly, I made an attempt at the radioactive material, any signs of substance resembling lamb had dissolved into a brown, fumigated paste, and together with the naan/tandoori woven roti grain concoction I now dipped in said curry, and took a bite. The reaction was immediate and far more sever than I imagined. I physically CANNOT see. I can barely strain a glance through feint slants where my lachrymal glands have malfunctioned and tears are flowing steadily. I am certainly dying, how long it will take I dont know. My tongue is swollen. Perhaps 3 times the size. A rash across my neck and face now too. There is a taste of metal in my mouth that im concerned is too similar to eating pure copper. The metallic taste is so fierce my taste buds are unsalvageable and am convinced that the taste of batteries in my mouth have lead to my desperate screams. I hoped at some stage the neighbours would be alerted if not by my screaming then by the fumigation of the radioactive substance. Ears ringing. The heat is unbearable so apart from an ambulance I need to somehow rest assured that in exchange for my life-someone does something about this because if this problem is not addressed the survival of the entire human race is at stake. Excuse the pun and pls send help.

  • It was only second visit to Bukhara and the second time that I was grossly disappointed with the availability of wine stock on the wine list. We ordered 3 different red wines from the red blend category and they had zero stock of all 3 wines. These were also the cheapest wines on the red blend list and nothing below R225. All 3 wines we wanted to try were just below R300 and the rest above that level. I bought Warwick wine at the cellar last week at a third of the price - that is just wrong. The food is really good but the poor management of wine stocks for a restaurant in the heart of the wine region and the crazy wines prices has made me write this review for the first time in my life. Don't go there - you will be disappointed.

  • I agree with the comments made. Went there for lunch and we were the only people there. Not surprising as the locals in Stellenbosch strongly take exception to paying R60 for a glass of wine!

    Nonetheless, the food was good (albeit very expensive) and the service is consistently good.

  • Very good Indian food. However, 125% markup on wine? That's a blatant rip off. Also, no self-respecting Indian restaurant should have beef on the menu
