Consistency, fine food and contemporary Italian cuisine are the benchmarks of Burrata, named Eat Out’s Best Italian Restaurant in 2013. The finest artisanal ingredients are sourced to create one of the best antipasti and charcuteries selections in town - arancini with aioli, sautéed squid with chilli and garlic, whipped gorgonzola, proscuitto, salami and Sicilian caponata.

Pizza lovers have a choice of rosso (tomato) or bianco (plain pizza) smothered in delicious gourmet toppings, like the Piccante with roasted apple, chipotle, pulled pork belly and provolone. The risotto is one of the stars of a new menu, layered with flavours of crayfish tail, seafood bisque and sesame seeds, and made with aged carnaroli rice. Modern pasta dishes for hearty appetites with a South African twist feature a signature springbok shank, brown onion and kale rigatoni, or bucatini nero with poached octopus and gremolata. Big on piquant flavour and sublime food combinations - like bonemarrow and preserved-lemon bucatini - Burrata effortlessly pushes the boundaries of Italian fare without straying from the comfort zone. Try to leave space for the dolce pizza, topped with marmalade, ricotta, toasted walnuts and mascarpone.

Co-owner Neil Grant, one of South Africa’s top sommeliers, has created a five-star wine list with foreign and vintage wines by the glass, as well as a signature selection of renowned Italian varieties, prosecco and French wines.

    Winner of our Best Italian Restaurant award in 2013, Burrata has since become the big sibling to two more Neil Grant restaurants, namely Bocca in Bree Street and the new River-Café replacement on Constantia Uitsig, Open Door. The delightfully brief menu opens out to two pages, with starters, pasta and main courses on the left, and the right mostly dedicated to Burrata’s famous pizzas, baked in just 90 seconds in the fire-engine-red oven using flour imported from Italy. Because I’ve enjoyed the pizza numerous times before, I resolve to skip it this time – but my willpower crumbles and I order the pizza bread with finely grated grana padano, rosemary and splashes of olive oil to nibble with my starter. With its golden colour, chewy texture and slightly blackened crust, it does not disappoint. Also irresistible is the starter featuring the restaurant’s namesake, burrata, with fresh figs and porcini dust. The smooth ball of mozzarella is simplicity itself, with cream emerging from its centre as I tear it apart to pair with the blushing pink figs and smart snaps of flatbread. Generously portioned, another starter of tuna crudo has some interesting flavours and textures with chickpeas, green olives, pickled cucumber ribbons and delicate tomato consommé cubes, but would perhaps work better for a light lunch or on a warmer evening. For mains, I am charmed by the orecchiette (homemade pasta in the shape of little ‘ears’) with its emerald dressing of basil and lemon, with peas, slivered green asparagus and sundried tomatoes. It’s fresh, light and lovely. A heartier option is the rigatoni with shredded short-rib and roasted red pepper ragu, which comes topped with crisps of onion. Other main options include roasted duck breast with confit potatoes and marsala cream, risotto with crispy pork and apple, and a pan-fried line fish (orange-listed kingklip). The desserts at Burrata and Bocca haven’t been highlights for me in the past, but tonight’s offerings, beautifully presented on dark crockery, are very easy to love. The warm white chocolate custard comes with well-matched almond biscuits, creamy dark chocolate gelato and strawberries, and the panna cotta is studded with vanilla seeds and served with a layered hazelnut dacquoise, mixed berry sorbet and sweet roasted peaches.

    Drinks
    Owner and master sommelier Neil Grant loves the grape game, with reams of pages dedicated to his wine selection (sometimes up to 13 offerings per varietal) and some extra-special bottles dubbed ‘the forgotten few’. There’s a brief choice by the glass, so we opt for the ‘sommelier’s selection’ of the house pinot noir, created as a joint project between Newton Johnson and Burrata, and it brings conversation to a halt at our first – and every – sip. Highly recommended.

    Ambience
    It’s an edgy, modern space that does not distract from the food. With all the flat surfaces of bricks, glass and wood it can get a bit noisy, but that adds to the atmosphere if you’re with a group.

    Service is discreet, professional and smooth. The waiters are knowledgeable, and everything is perfectly timed, from the greeting at the door to the arrival and departure of plates, topping up of wine and the dealing with the bill.

    Enjoy the chefs’ show through the glass-fronted kitchen and in the pizza-preparation area.

    Expect contemporary plates of modern-Italian food – not piles of mama’s pasta. Not for nothing was this eatery the winner of Eat Out's Best Italian Restaurant in 2013. Apart from authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas boasting thin bases with moreish, chewy crusts (baked at 480˚C in 90 seconds), there are also plenty of exquisite mains to choose from. The risotto with pork belly and Granny Smith apple is a sure winner, as is the handmade ravioli with beetroot, roasted red onion, butternut and goat’s cheese served in a ‘dry’ style with lemon butter. Dishes are artfully plated with dollops of purées, swirls of flavoured oils and tiny mounds of mousse and jellies.

    The wine list has been carefully curated by the owner Neil Grant, who is a qualified sommelier. Hidden gems and lesser-known varietals abound, as well as a few well-priced international wines like Tuscan Sangiovese (available by the glass or bottle) and true German Riesling.

    Service is sharp and attentive.

    Ambience 
    Raw brick, wood-panelled walls and steel blend together in that industrial-chic style that is ever-present at the Biscuit Mill. There’s a peephole into the kitchen through a temperature-controlled glass cube used for curing meats, and the big red pizza oven in the restaurant adds to the flow. Overall, the interior is dark and moody, though it can feel a little soulless, especially on a quiet night.

    Don’t leave without an espresso, as the house blend is roasted by the experts at Origin.

  • You’ll love the ambience, warmth and attention to detail here, and once you taste their pizza (cooked for a matter of seconds in a fire-engine-red oven) you might disregard the menu, but do so at your peril. Chef Annemarie Steenkamp creates sublime dishes like seared tuna with squid ink and mushroom; risotto with crispy pork, granny smith and red currants; and pineapple zabaglione with mini meringues and fresh basil. Neil Grant is an expert at food and wine pairing, so trust him. You simply must order the burrata, obviously...

    Neapolitan-style pizzas are baked in an oven built in Naples, and the tomatoes and flour are imported from Italy. Pizza bases here are slightly thicker than we’ve become accustomed to, but toppings are unfussy and combinations classic. I recommend the di mare (seafood, garlic and chilli) and the delre for the truffle lover. Pastas are excellent. Dessert pizzas are large, so do share.

    As the eatery is owned by Neil Grant, former sommelier at the award winning Rust en Vrede Estate, the wine list reflects some of South Africa’s best, with a few French and Italian options available. Neil is hands on with advice.

    A favourite, for sure. It is easily becoming a regular place to visit. You can experience the passion of the people that work in the kitchen and serve you. Recommended for a vibey weekend night. Their pizza competes with the best in town and if you’ve tasted it once, you might forget about the rest of the menu. But the seared tuna with squid ink and mushroom starter and the risotto with crispy pork, granny smith apple and red currant vinaigrette are definitely worthy. The dessert menu will finish of a great experience with dishes like pineapple zabaglione, mini meringues and basil leaves. Try the cioccolato pizza for dessert made with homemade chocolate and hazelnut spread, banana and treacle sugar. (July 2013)

  • Unfortunately we visited on a wintery Monday evening so the restaurant was a bit quite which maybe left a bit to be desired for ambiance, however, the food and service certainly made up for it. The four of us shared a variety of starters followed by a few pizzas and pastas. Everything was delicious, fresh and cooked to perfection. I am a thin crust pizza lover, however the thick soft chewy pizza base that Buratta offers is incredible. Spencer, the manager, made a great wine recommendation and was full of knowledge and understanding of the very interesting wine list that Neil Grant selected. Will definitely return!

  • From the word go phoning to reserve table, communication was superb sharing where we will be seated! STARTER Burrata Cheese pleasant surprise being brought to live by tasty prosciutto crumbs, figs and flatbread! PiZZZA DIavollo's marinated cherry tomatoes truly the cherry on top of the pizza(yummy) . Pressed Pork Belly tender and I have hope for vegetable now ( thanks ) White custard dessert & choc / mocha ice cream subtle flavours ( not to sweet) ended meal off delicouisly!   • When I read all these reviews, I wonder what restaurant some of the previous people attended. I have eaten at Burrata at least 10 times and it is my first choice restaurant for any special occasion. The food is always delicious, my favourites have to be the salad with fried brussel sprouts (sound weird, but trust me, it works!), I generally am swayed by the risotto as a main course (which is one of my all time favourites), but the beef belly, mussels and any pizza are also delish! The service has always been attentive and I hardly have to pick up a bottle to top up my wine or water. The waiters are knowledgeable, well trained and courteous. Sometimes if I want to change my table or my order, the team are very quick to deliberate and let me know what accommodations they are able to make. Don't even get me started on the special and exclusive wines!!! WOW!

  • For all the rave reviews we read, Buratta certainly lacks good customer service. We had a terrible experience yesterday evening from our interaction with the hostess to our waitress who failed to acknowledge nevertheless serve us until we asked to be seated in another area. This was not received well by the waitress who made it her business to say we cannot be seated elsewhere even though the restaurant was barely three quarters full. This experience showed us how they treat their customers with very little respect. I would certainly not recommend it and the food is not such a great draw card to make me want to go back.

  • After hearing about their award as Best Italian Restaurant I was tempted to try their food. But after reading the reviews on this site my temptation was quickly replaced with trepidation. I am glad I went and found out for myself.
    People are quick to complain but won't post their positive experiences, which means that review sites are often more bad then good.

    The menu was succinct and the wine list extensive. Spencer, the manager and sommelier, was a great help and very friendly. He knew the menu and the wine list and was a great addition to our experience. We decided to try a little bit of each course on the menu.

    The risotto with crispy pork, granny smith apple and currant vinaigrette was for me, I have had the same at Society Bistro, and I must say that although it was good, Society was better. I didn't enjoy the crispy pork "sawdust" on top, but the currants were a great addition and it was still an enjoyable, but rich, dish.

    Next was the gnocchi, gorgonzola cream, broccolini, toasted walnuts and pancetta. This was the star of the evening. It was delicious!

    Finally we tried their popular 'prosciutto e arugula' pizza. The neopolitan style pizza was really good. A pizza is a pizza, but it was definitely one the top pizza's i've had. You can't compare it to Col'Cacchio's or BUTLERS! (as someone else has on here). They're worlds and borders apart. The flame blackened crust is not burnt and adds a great authentic flavour.

    All in all, it was a great evening and I am happy I took some of these reviews with a pinch of salt (which by the way did not need to be added to the food, it was all perfectly seasoned).

    After hearing good things about this restaurant I decided to visit the establishment for Dinner!
    The wine (2011 Jordan Cabernet) was the only good aspect of the evening!
    Service and ambiance was fair!
    The food was terrible!
    My wife's "seafood" pizza was soggy, tasteless, lacking in seafood and cold!
    Butlers / Dominos / Debonair can teach this restaurant how to make a Pizza!
    The "mezze platter" starter for R182 contained 6 slices of average Salami, 6 slices of poor beef, 'mounds' of rocket, green & black olives, tiny bowl of sundried tomato's and two pieces of cheese!
    BLAND!!!
    My beef belly tasted boiled and was sinewy!
    Cannot believe that in the vicinity of Africa's finest restaurants (Test Kitchen & Potluck Club) an establishment can come up so short!

  • We'll having just read the previous negative review, I have to agree. I thought the restaurant rather average and the service slow and lack lustre. Also being Italian - growing up in an Italian kitchen with a pizza oven outside and having travelled through Italy, I have to put the critics' and rave reviews down to hype or not knowing any better. Take my word on this, you can do much better (even in Cape Town)!

  • Being italian and neapolitan it seems that burrata has still a lot to learn about pizza and gnocchi .The pizza was average but burnt underneath which left a very bitter taste in the mouth and one could not cut through the crust as it was hard. As for the gnocchi it was like eating mash potatoes so very disappointing. I would be embarrassed to bring overseas visitors from Italy there. My visit was on the 17 Jan 2014

The thicker pizzas take a bit of getting used to, but Vodka topping on a pizza was quite a treat!   • Mamma Mia! Our favorite Italian restaurant in Cape Town. And the competition is tough. But Burrata it all works together - delicious well presented food, great wines (of course, thanks to Niel), cool and yet welcoming venue. Burrata has a genuine Italian feeling, and at the same time a contemporary feeling. Sometimes Italian restaurants are a bit too traditional and hardcore... Can't pick any favorites, it's all good. However the pizzas are something to write home about. And have Niel recommend some nice wine. Enjoy!

  • This is a trendy, stylish venue. The service was friendly and efficient. The wine list is well-balanced - a little bit of everything to suit all tastes and moods. The six ladies at our table ordered a variety of different meals and we all agreed the food is excellent. The desserts, however, were a bit disappointing. The prices seem expensive, but were justified once the meal was had. All in all, it is a wonderful dining experience. I will certainly be going back again and again.

  • Me and 9 of my friends visited Burrata on a Saturday evening. Being a Taste reader and a person that adores great wine and food I had to visit Burrata because of the great reviews I have read. Heads up for the interior designer because this place has a great atmosphere, unfortunately the rest of the experience was very average. The flour for the pizza dough might be imported from Italy but if the center of your pizza dough is still raw then this will impress no one. The second let down was the corkage; I don’t know why they allow it because at R75 and only one bottle per table they should rather scrap the whole idea of BYO.  The overall experience was okay in the end. I just felt it was very average and not as great as I hoped it would be.

  • Quite simply one of the best restaurants in the city. I have experienced Burrata on several occasions and it is nothing short of phenomenal every time.
    Authentic delicious Italian dishes (probably the best pizza in Cape Town) backed by incredible service!

  • Venue is trendy and cosy for winter, food is good but service a nightmare. Unless you're doing a review like the one in the Top of the Times there is no impromtu dishes. The front of house manager is definitely not flexible. I requested to be moved from across the drafty door and she refused three times, although one of the tables I wanted was left open for the entire evening. Ordering pizza is fine, anything else and the wait is at least 20 minutes as experienced by my fellow diner. Our dessert menus were lying on the table for 20 minutes before I had to call for assistance from the three waiters we had. If you like bad service, be my guest.

  • A charming host/sommelier and two hot blondes (one front of house and one in charge of the kitchen) run this amazing new restaurant. I have been here a couple of times now and it has been consistently fantastic. I love the bombastic pizza oven producing some proper Napoletane pizzas, none of that avo, bacon and feta stuff, but flavourful original toppings such as burrata mozzarella and fennel sausage. Anything the chef has put on a plate so far has been absolutely delicious, faithful to Italian food ideology - if there’s such a thing - but with her own creative and modern take on it. Burrata is one of those places where you’re not just guaranteed good food and great wine (wine list is an absolute beauty!) you’re guaranteed a good time. It’s a bit hidden behind the walls of the Biscuit Mill, but get there. As Michelin guides would say, vaut le voyage! Worth the trip.

Some of the best pizza I have ever had plus a great choice of starters, which are very well proportioned. Do yourself a favour and go for a great relaxed night out. It's one of those menus where you have to flip a coin to pick something because everything sounds fabulous - and my guess is that everything turns out fabulous, too! Beautiful venue, great attention to detail (from the cutlery and crockery through to the lighting and decor), and positively stunning food.   • Celebrated our wedding anniversary at Burrata last night, we were seated and then 2 complimentary glasses of Prosecco were placed on our table - what an awesome touch. The staff were warm and friendly, but never familiar or invasive. The food was awesome - I had the short rib pasta, meat so tender you could cut it with a fork. The broth was so very tasty without being overpowering. Bren had a stunning pizza - incredibly tasty and not too cheesy or oily. What a superb evening - we will definitely be going there again.   • Burrata is beautifully set out with the red pizza oven at it's centre. Whilst the service was good and the food was reasonable, I did find it overpriced. A pizza is a pizza after all. The wine list was also very pricey, nothing for under R150. We had brought a bottle of champagne along (special occasion) and had to pay R75 corkage to open it. I was not impressed by this - at many other restaurants they will try to make the experience extra special if they know its a special day; no such luck at Burrata. I guess I'm not quite sure what Burrata is trying to achieve, a high end restaurant experience, or a fun weekday pizza vibe? I think it's difficult to try to be both. Personally, I have other favourites for a weekday pizza and a (cheaper) glass of wine, and I have other high end favourites for a special day where I know I'll get excellent service. So my verdict is, good experience, but it won't become one of my favourites.

  • Had the pleasure of experiencing Burrata for the first time on the 21/03/12 . Fantastic space with friendly staff and a very attentive Neil came to great us at our table. We shared a pizza bread to start which was tasty , crisp and just the perfect blackened crust. For mains I had the Pappardelle slow cooked short rib which our waitress recommended and my partner had the rib eye - both were fantastic. We had such a great time that we have booked to go back again tonight with some friends.

  • Yes, yes and yes! Food is great, wine list is excellent, and venue is exactly the type of modern Italian style that I like. I've had pizza for lunch - a perfect dough with delicious mushroom, tomato and truffle topping. Dinner has been olives, different kinds of brushettas, a shared pasta with rib eye and pork belly for mains. All so delicious, well cooked and presented. Like a modern take on Italian food, but still very authentic and without any fuzz. The Zabaglione for dessert is a good choice, but all the desserts look fab. Good coffee as well.   • It was time for the by monthly lunch of the Three Musketeers and it was my turn. Always looking for new places I decided on Burrato. a New Italian Style restaurant with an extensive wine list. Should expect that from an ex-sommelier like Neil Grant.

    The setting in trendy Old Bisquit Mill is laid back with inside anicent warmth through clever decor and outside tables on a verandah and under umbrellas.

    We started with a freshly baked pizza bread and an anti pasta platter. Pizza is fantastic. Soft and fluffy with a savoury(marmite according to Clive) flavour. Stuart (fresh back from an Indian business trip) declared that it tasted like Naan bread in pizza format and we all agreed.

    After much collaboration we have decided to again go over the top and order 3 rib eye steaks with a pizza in the middle. Someone made the point that we are lunching together too much as we tend to like the same stuff! (and eat our steak the same way - rare)

    The steak was perfectly done but the winner of this dish was the polenta. Never in my life have I eaten polenta with this wonderful fluffy texture that melts in your mouth and make you cry out for more.

    Chef Annamarie Steenkamp obviously knows what she is doing. Mooi gedoen girlfriend!

    After some shocking Burgundy presented in a fantastic decanter by owner Neil grant we finished a perfect afternoon of indulgence with some zabblione and tart and a grappa with double espressos.

  • What a thoroughly enjoyable evening! Welcomed at the door by the friendly manager, we immediately felt at ease in the beautiful and warm dining area. Wood cladding along the one wall is a nice feature, as are the open kitchen and glass wine cellar. The menu is well structured, and very well priced. For starters, we enjoyed the puglia burrata and crostini, and bruschetta with rocket and prosciutto. Simple, but very tasty. For mains, we opted to try one of the pizzas each, one with fennel sausage and smoked mozzarella, and one with figs, gorgonzola and prosciutto. Cooked in the Italian oven for 90 seconds, these authentic delights have crisp thin bases and the toppings were utterly delicious. To finish, we enjoyed a lime zabaglione with berries, and a banana and chocolate pizza - quite yummy and generously sized. The wine list was equally well priced and comprehensive, with many wines by the glass to choose from, as well as a few cocktail options. Throughout the evening the service was attentive and friendly, without being overbearing, and the music and lighting added to the overall impression of comfort and warmth. Looking forward to our next visit!

  • An amazing restaurant. The food was brilliantly made with awesome flavours! I can highly recommend the pizzas. The wine list is also, understandably, very good with a great selection that caters for any budget. The staff are very competent and Neil is always near-by to help with any questions or recommendations off the wine list.

  • Cape Town so needed a place like this. Amazing, hip space with seriously yummy food. And it is reasonably priced! I will certainly be back again and again. A real stand out.
