This is a sophisticated seafood restaurant, which serves everything from lobster bisque to line fish baked in the oven with tomatoes and onions. Have some of the best prawns in town, like the succulent queens, cooked Portuguese-style in beer and peri peri. The calamari may be more pricy than your average seafood franchise, but then you can taste the superior quality and preparation of the produce. Good oysters and highly-recommended sushi.
The selection varies from middle-of-the-range to top-quality premium brands, with a good selection by the glass.
It’s friendly and the staff clearly know their regular customers.
It’s normally packed at the gills, but it has a welcoming vibe. It’s given a luxe feel by the use of white linen tablecloths and good glassware.

The service at Fishmonger Illovo is BRILLIANT! The manager and all the staff are very friendly and highly attentive. We had sushi which was brilliant! The desert and coffee was also top notch! We'll definitely go back!

Lovely food and venue but I was particular impressed with the service. Knowledgeable and attentive waiters who mastered the subtlety of always being present, without us feeling as though they were hovering over us.

Top marks for Fishmonger in Illovo. Although I don't dine there that often, the few times that I have been there with friends, the food, service and ambience have been a cut above most restaurants of a similar class. It is easy to see that this restaurant is well managed. That makes all the difference between average and extraordinary.
I've always quite enjoyed Fishmonger, even though I found their prices leaning towards the expensive side. After my visit on Tues 25 March I won't be returning anytime soon. The calamari served to us were the tiny tubes one finds at a pub, the haloumi was rubbery, the tuna sashimi was cut far too thick. I can't see how a restaurant can charge R250 for a plain grilled piece of sea bass (cultivated from Mauritius). Other restaurants in Johannesburg charge half this amount. The same can be said for the prawn curry which carries an equally exorbitant price tag. If the food was amazing I might be able to justify it, but the most enjoyable part of the meal were the veg sides which we all agreed was better than any of the seafood we ordered. Sadly, we won't be returning, as we all left feeling rather hard done by.
The receptionist would benefit from being friendlier, and there is no need to point out we were late for our reservation, especially considering it was a week night and the traffic in Joburg, otherwise the food is always excellent.
Tried the new Fishmonger in Rosebank, and it did not disappoint. The food and service is of the same high quality. The ambience may even be slightly better than its Illovo counterpart, with its spacious and sunny open deck!
Fishmonger is a down to earth, non- pretentious restaurant. We ate there on Saturday evening and were very happy with the experience. The quality of the line-fish was outstanding and the service was particularly noteworthy. I would recommend this restaurant if you are after excellent seafood and fantastic service and dont mind spending the evening in a family restaurant.
