Food
When you don’t feel like cooking at home, but would still like to keep your eating clean with a simple and healthy dish, head to Fruits & Roots. There’s a daily vegan and vegetarian harvest table-style buffet from 11.30am on weekdays and 11am on Saturdays (the restaurant is closed on Sundays, but the adjacent and expansive health shop is open), weighed by the plate or to go.

Get there early as these offerings, which include root vegetable and aubergine salads, Mediterranean-inspired warm dishes and quiches, tend to run out first. If you order from the menu, lunch options include a variety of sandwiches, tramezzinis, wraps, hot meals and healthy burgers and melts. The Earth burger is made with a 100% vegetarian and gluten-free tofu burger, while the cheese melt is a satisfying mix of roasted peppers, tofu (and tofu mayo) and mozzarella.

If you feel like a sandwich, choose between 100% rye, gluten-free or wholewheat bread – try the hummus, cucumber, red pepper and sprouts. Wraps are served with crispy, guilt-free veggie crisps and you can’t go wrong with halloumi and avo, which comes with plenty of both as well as lettuce, spinach and pesto. Warmer meal options include a comforting, nutty and gingery Thai curry and lentil-based shepherd’s pie.

Drinks
Detailed descriptions, and interesting names, will lead you to the shake or smoothie that will best suit you. The green flu buster with apple and celery is mixed with echinacea, the mindbender contains carrot, pineapple and ginger with a boost of ginseng and gingko, while the waistline buster with carrots, beetroot, ginger and celery requires a little bit of faith. The peaceful warrior smoothie is a mix of spirulina, avo, spinach, banana and whey protein, and a perfect pick-me-up.

Service
Slightly unhelpful; the assumption seems to be that you’re a regular who knows what mesquite contributes to a smoothie. Visit as far away to closing time as possible to better your chances of encountering a patient waitron.

Ambience
Tables and chairs are quite functional and there’s the background hum – and smell – of the health shop next door. To escape this take a seat in the small courtyard in front of the health shop, with your back facing the store and soak up the sun.

And…
For every smoothie, juice and buffet meal sold, Fruits & Roots will plant a tree with Restore Mother Nature. Get eating!

User reviews

  • Disgustingly overpriced. unacceptable margins. poor management. Immense lack of moral integrity. Highly recommend against purchase at this store. Good alternatives: "Jacksons real food market" "organic emporium"(Bryanston shopping centre) "fresh earth" "leafy greens" "Bryanston organic market (open Thursday and Saturday)
