Critic's review

One of Joburg’s busiest curry destinations – and rightfully so. The flavours are light years ahead of the ubiquitous Durban curry. Great lamb dishes (korma and badami), tandoori options, chicken makhnie, exceptional biryani and paneer in rich butter and tomato gravy. (EO mag 2014)

Authentic, and beautifully prepared and presented North Indian cuisine has made this one of Jozi’s most popular Indian establishments. You can have juicy chunks of chicken tikka, the reshmi kebab or dishes from the tandoor. If you like your Indian cuisine with lots of sauce, go for the badami gosht (tender and lean lamb in an almond and cream gravy), the vegetarian paneer in a rich butter and tomato gravy, or the gorgeous kingklip curry in a spicy and fragrant paste. The lamb makhani comes with melt-in-the-mouth meat in a rich and spiced tomato sauce, and the aloo palak’s startlingly green spinach sauce would please even Popeye.

    Wine
There's a small and reasonably priced wine list but it could include more Rieslings to accompany the spicy food. Beer is always a good alternative.

    Service
    Smiling and friendly.

    Ambience
The setting is airy with open ceiling trusses, wood flooring and brown and blue hues. There’s also a raised dining area.

    And...
Great takeouts when you don’t want to slave in your own kitchen. (JW, October 2011)

  • From the moment the owner/manager greets you at the door to the moment you glide out of the restaurant it is amazing. The ambience allows you to have an intimate dinner with a bunch of friends and it feels like you are at home. The service is close to perfect, but there are one or two things they can fine-tune. What i can say is that the staff is extremely friendly and definitely competent and know the menu well allowing them to advise on food options. The food: PERFECTION!!! I have never been disappointed and they have managed to get my meals right. Including the side dishes. And i always take friends along and they have never been disappointed. The sea of gleeful faces around the table is always a delight. *tips hat to Ghazals - Peter Place!*

  • I had some of the best northern Indian food I've ever had here. We were quite a big group but service was still excellent and the food was to die for. I had a lamb korma with a naan bread - best I've ever had. A little pricey, but the portions are big and it is worth every cent. The place was packed on a Tuesday evening which shows that it is something special. Definitely give it a try!

  • The curry at Ghazal's is superb - possibly some of the best in the country! The restaurant is cozy and unique, although it is a little too dark for my liking. Definitely worth a visit.

  • The worst service I have ever experienced. Booked a table they where over booked. They then seated others of similar numbers before us, as a first impression it's a no go, think they have got a bit to big for there boots.

  • We live in the East Rand at least 45 minutes away in good traffic. Hubby and I will regularly drive past several other Indian restaurants to grab a taste of this kitchen's fare. We've been clients for easily over 10 years and their consistency of excellent, prompt and friendly service as well as delicious meals speaks volumes. Having tried many other Indian restaurants, few come close. My no 1 pick in Joburg for Indian food. Thank you for the outstanding job.

  • No offense the cuisine is far from authentic. It is Indian food made to suit a Western person's palate, much like a Chinese take away. Curry is spicy and sweet, an Indian would vomit in his mouth, which explains why there isn't one Indian diner in the place. If you want Indian food go to Vikrams (Banjaara) Lonehill or Bismillah when you're in town.

  • The food was good, as always - the prices, however, have SOARED. Ghazals used to be super affordable, but has now headed into the territory of being over-priced, which is a massive disappointment. Also - the service was incredibly slow. I got the impression that the restaurant was understaffed. Our naan bread also arrived at the table cold. Honestly, I am also a little nervous of the manager - I have heard some things about him being very rude and abrasive, and he does come across a bit like a headmaster who will rap you over the knuckles if you complain about anything!

  • We ate here by chance on Thursday evening and it was the nicest surprise! The waiter, Ryan, was brilliant - the chef adapted the food to suit us and everything just seemed to flow without a hitch! The ambience was great, the food was tasty, the service was brilliant! I havent ever had service like that before. We will definitely be going back regularly! PS ask for Ryan to get the service you deserve!

  • I have very seldom been sent away from a restaurant after booking because I was twenty minutes late. Particularly in the freezing cold rain on the same night I booked. Without so much as a phone call. Why bother with the details. This restaurant is so arrogant that they feel they can turn away customers who have booked. They are full, for now.We were made to stand in the freezing cold, waiting for the manager to attempt to find another table after giving away our booked table. He merely informed us that we could not be accomodated, and must leave. We left!Never again.Vote with feet.We used to be there several times a month. No more!

  • We had a good dinner. We shared a starter platter - the tandoori chicken was particularly good. I had the prawn biriyani, which was excellent. Most of the table felt that the curries, particularly the Korma were a little on the sweet side.

  • The best Indian food to be had in Joburg by a mile. (and Ive tried them all) The atmosphere and service is satisfactory, but the food brings me back again and again.

  • We had dinner there on 6th October and the food was outstanding. Options for vegetarians were good, and I had a fantastically flavourful Aloo Jeera (potato curry). Apparently the Lamb Korma was divine. They certainly produced the best naan breads Ive ever tasted. Decor was more upmarket than the photographs that I saw on the website, which was a great surprise. And the option for extra mild was certainly welcome. Portions seemed small, but you can never really finish the meal in any event, so they are suitable. Prices are surprisingly reasonable.

  • Just thinking about Ghazal, makes my mouth water. Salivating at the though of yet another whirl-wind experience to tantalise my taste-buds with new and exotic infusions. This place never ceases to amaze, whether its dining out on the favourite Chicken Tikka Masala or devouring the Lamb Chops to the bone, its romantically lit atmosphere, impeccable service and delicious offerings are one of the finest Ive had the pleasure to sample, without making a huge dent on the wallet. And do save space for the heavenly Burfee Ice Cream and Kheer!!! Cant wait to try out the entire menu.

  • We had an excellent meal at Ghazal. We were part of a large party, and the service was efficient and friendly all night. The menu contains a good range of options, and I liked the fact that you could order your preferred heat for your curry with the waiter. My chicken vindaloo (medium hot) was excellent, with the flavours full and well developed. The Cobra indian beer was the perfect accompaniment!I will certainly return to sample more of their dishes.
