We visited Riebeek Kasteel and used Old Oak Manor as our base - Oak Old Manor is on the same property as the restaurant.

The restaurant is fabulous - I loved the decor, it's cosy with a fireplace in winter and brilliant for alfresco dining in summer.

The staff were efficient, friendly and really took their initiative on a busy day when we visited (Father's Day).

The menu is small but there is something for everyone, chicken, linefish, lamb, beef and a vegetarian option. We were a party of 8 including 2 children and everybody commented on a sterling meal. Some chose starters and others had dessert and that was delicious also.

This is a wonderful opportunity to take a drive into the country - it's not more than an hour from Cape Town and experience kind country hospitality and awesome food.

Cafe Felix and Poplars Restaurant in the Durbanville Wine Route are both owned by the same family. Poplars has recently been bought and is undergoing exciting changes under the new management so we look forward to revisiting and sampling their fare!

It was an experience that my friends and I don't wish to repeat, eating at a restaurant in Riebeeck Kasteel that apparently had served good food the previous year. It was the Olive Festival this weekend - a perfect opportunity to showcase skills. Instead this establishment served a meal that a 10 year old could have improved on admirably. It wasn't as though 1 meal out of the 4 ordered was brilliant. His "mash potato" tasted about 2 weeks old and was brown and strange looking. The Beef Bourguignonne consisted of 5 pieces of sub standard meat with fat (definitely not a good cut), a glutinous nondescript gravy and although the waitress recommended it - I think the establishment was keen to offload old food onto me. To exacerbate our shocking dining ordeal this owner charged us R10 for lemon slices to accompany our sparkling water. Besides needing a crash course in French cooking he needs to retrain on the Italian front as well. He certainly has no idea of what deconstructed Ravioli is - it floated in excess sauce and looked nothing like the real thing. The meal which looked the most appetising, the kingklip, was the only meal not charged for. The Western Cape offers so many outstanding dining out experiences - what is this useless restaurant doing spoiling our otherwise perfect day at an amazingly well orchestrated Olive Festival.
