Owner's description

The menu at Café Picobella Trattoria focuses on Italian country style cuisine. Starter recommendations are the roasted butternut and gorgonzola pot - butternut with sage, gorgonzola and black mushroom served in a puff pastry pot (ideal for vegetarians), or the calamari ripleni – calamari stuffed with a spicy combination of braised lemon, tomato and risotto rice. For a very traditional Italian starter try the anti pasti platter which is available in both meat and vegetarian options. For main course the pork a la milanese (crumbed pork chops with mash) is a firm favourite with regulars, as is the house speciality osso buco, which sells out whenever it’s on the menu! Café Picobella is also famous for its pizzas which are baked in a very stylish mosaic clad pizza oven. The unique style tiramisu or the polenta orange cake are both recommended for dessert.

Took my daughter for a Saturday evening meal. The old-mansion feel was delightful, though echoing and noisy as expected. Someone ordered 22 take-out pizzas for a party and the kitchen mindlessly gave preference to this order to the exclusion of most others. As a result, we waited well over an hour for one pizza and one pasta, while the scurrying waitrons did nothing to update us on progress of our order. My daughter said her salmon pasta was delicious, but my anchovy-based pizza could have been dipped in the Dead Sea for the quantity of salt that encrusted it. I have been to this venue before and the food and service was better then; perhaps better planning on the part of the kitchen would have heightened our enjoyment this time.
Thank you Cafe Picobella for accommodating us last night, we really had a beautiful evening at the restaurant. The atmosphere was perfect for the celebration, the food was awesome and the staff was really so friendly.
We use to drive past the restaurant and always saud we should try it, I must say the only disappointing this was waiting so long to try it out and we will definitely be back soon.
A Big thank you to the owner who out of his own arranged the most amazing chocolate cake which made the evening so much more sweeter and special.
Thank you once again for a memorable. Beautiful evening with friends and for making it so much more special with you kind and friendly staff. A definite recommendation.

Great food! Great bread snacks. Awesome vibe. Great ice cream and chocolate sauce. Terrible service.

Take a head of lettuce - don't even bother to chop, quarter a tomato, add a few slices of onion, a few wedges of tasteless cheese and a few olives. Charge a customer another R8 for a few slivers of cucumber - and call it an Italian salad.
Add whatever toppings you feel like (because it will all taste the same - of nothing) to a thick stodgy base, and cremate in your beautiful pizza oven. Don't bother coming round to check on us because we'll never be back! Absolutely dismal!

On the last visit I was told they do not do French fries anymore after my plate arrived with crisps. Then the food was inedible. It is time they jack up their act as I used to love this place.
