Traditional and Americanised Mexican dishes in a quirky, vibey setting with fairy lights. Don’t miss the nachos. (EO mag 2014)

    Food
Expect all the usual suspects, like quesadillas, tacos, fajitas, a good old chilli con carne – mild or hot – and sincronizada, a wheat tortilla with cheese, chicken, bacon, ham, tomatoes and onions, served with guacamole and sour cream. The prawn ceviche comes with tortilla chips, a tray of Bandito’s sauces and Chapala, a great picante sauce. End the meal with buñuelos with cinnamon, sugar and ice cream.

    Wine
Tequila is the drink du jour and they have a daunting collection. The waitress may even suggest a tequila coffee instead of the usual.

    Service
Waiters are warm and charming; there is a good interaction between them and their patrons. Old-fashioned Chappies in place of the ubiquitous Endearmints with the bill is a nice touch.

    Ambience
A colourful, fun mix. A larger-than-life painting of Frida Kahlo vies for attention with the vintage movie posters adorning the walls and the beaded chilli light fittings.

    And...
This is definitely the place to hang out in summer. The open saloon design might make it a bit chilly in winter, but wall-mounted gas heaters try valiantly to keep everyone comfy. If that fails, have another tequila! (October 2011)

  • Second visit and totally disappointed. The place felt dirty, service was very poor, no availability of menu items and drinks, food was awful and guacamole old, brown and bitter...sorry you won't see us again :(

  • My first visit to this establishment was an experience all on it's own. We discovered the restaurant nestled among the bustling rejuvenated streets of Old Melville. As you enter through the saloon doors, you are transported to a Mexican bar, surrounded by old posters and cacti, and the Mexican music takes over. BEST MEXICAN FOOD EVER! We are massive fans of anything different, but this blew our socks off!

  • Great place. Great vibe. Never disappoints me, personally. I have the craving again, in fact. I'll be paying a visit soon.

  • Thinking of my Miami trip recently, I really needed some authentic Mexican Food and searched the web and read mixed reviews on Cafe Mexicho in Melville. Tucked away in this trendy surburb, the wooden doors open to a friendly and bustling atmosphere. The smell of Tequila permeates the air and the food was excellent. we started off with the Jalepeno Poppers, drank too many Margeritas and Mexican Beer, followed by nachos with refried beans and then Chicken Tacos. Ok I loved Chipolote so this brought back some fond memeories. Our waiter Junior was amazing, super efficient and extremely accomodating. Nikita the owner, well done to you and you and yoyr team, we will definitely be visiting for my next mexican craving.

  • Don't understand the hype. The food had no flavour, the last thing one would expect, its a Mexican restaurant after all! The food was way overpriced, R95 for a bland Barito!

  • Great place to eat. Very different from the usual eateries in terms of good and setting, and very welcome at that.

The taco I had was not particularly great, but the quesadilla was nice.

Overall I'd say the food is palatable. So if you're looking for something difference I'd recommend Cafe Mexicho.

  • Nice food and atmosphere. Great margaritas, poppers and nachos. Pity about the owner's (Paul Nel and his 'has been' wife Christina Storm) poor attitude. When we ordered from him it was if he was doing us a favour. He thinks he is just so cool - maybe he could pull it off if he was 35 years younger!

  • Great Mexican food served in a casual atmosphere by jacked-up staff. Great for dinner/ good night out - not for quiet dining. Definitely will return.

  • Cafe Mexicho is a quaint and authentic restaurant with a whole lot of attitude that explodes through the food. The dishes will titillate any non-believers taste buds! The meals are prepared by a Mexican chef who once came over to our table to ask if everything was satisfactory. This brings me onto my next point. Apart from the food being such an adventurous treat, the service has always been outstanding. I love the quirky decor which subtly sets the scene for nearly any occasion.MUCHAS GRACIAS!

  • Not sure Luke knows what he is talking about since he actually eats at Spur. Im from California living in SA. People always ask me what I miss about home I honestly dont miss too much... maybe just...real sales, good shoes, the friendly smile of a stranger, the occasional excuse me in public spaces, Sun Chips, and Mexican Food... but not anymore Cafe Mexicho in Melville is awesome. Take it from me Im not from Mexico but Im a close second to anyone you are going to meet outside of a real Mexican, the food here is good... not only good but as authentic as its gonna get.The whole experience and set up is really close to other Mexican Cantina restaurants Ive frequented back at home. And you cant go wrong with jugs of margaritas. Cool Peeps + Food + Margarita Jugs + Sombrero = FUN. Check it out.

  • Really, really bad Mexican food. Can guarantee that TexMex at Spur is better. But the jugs of Margaritas are awesome, so go to drink and laugh - but definitely do not eat.

  • A really fun place to share a great jug of margaritas. The food is good, but I wouldnt say it is really somewhere to go for food as a primary focus.

  • We had a birthday party at this viby restaurant. Derek was absolutely fantastic to deal with and really helpful in organising everything. This is the perfect place for a party, especially a Mexican dress up! We sat in a separate section which kept it nice and cosy and had a bar for our private use which was convenient. The service was excellent, considering our enormous table, and the waiters have tons of personality. The Mexican chef makes authentic, delicious meals. All in all, worth a visit.

  • So, I went there expecting great things but overall was sadly disappointed. The Jalapeno poppers were soggy and tasteless, although we liked the chilli and the burrito. The tortillas were heated on the grill and tasted earthy and delicious. However, a mexican place that cant even make a decent margarita from scratch - they use a synthetic tasting mix!? And doesnt serve coffee... have they not heard of cafe de Olla? Its not really what I was hoping for. Also, because of the bar, it gets horribly smokey at the tables... all in all, wouldnt go back.
