Chef Martin Ferreira is best known for his ornate and decadent patisserie, confectionary and bespoke cakes. All products are certified halaal by the NIHT.
This Greenside branch functions as both a patisserie and a café, serving simple breakfasts and lunches. Breakfasts include ‘Eggs your way’: two eggs prepared to your liking (fried, scrambled or as an omelette) served with three toppings and your choice of toast. There’s also a selection of smoothie bowls and an energy bowl comprising fruits, yoghurts, nuts and seeds.
For lunch, you’ll find vegan offerings like a Buddha bowl and a falafel wrap, a selection of pizzas and an array of eclectic café items. Also find battered fish and chips with lemon butter, a Wagyu beef burger served in a brioche bun with cheese and mustard mayo, and a Philly cheesesteak served on a garlic-and-butter baguette. It’s the kind of dish you’d expect to find on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, over the top and loaded with cheese. The falafel – served with triangles of warmed pita, fried aubergine and dips – makes for a neat and tidy lunch. It’s light and tasty but the tomato salsa could do with a vinaigrette to give it a lift. The pizzas are the sort that would cure any hangover, dense and dripping in cheese. They’re not made in a wood-fired oven so you miss that charred and bubbled crust, but they’re great value for money, as are most items on the menu.
Sweets are the main attraction. Grab a cup of coffee and a selection of éclairs, chocolate-covered cronuts, mini pecan pies, milk tarts, lemon meringue or an assortment of opera cakes – they’re the perfect pint-sized morsel for an afternoon treat so you won’t feel bad having two… or maybe three. Or opt for a slice of cake: the baklava, lemon meringue, carrot or red velvet never cease to delight. The croissants are their only shortfall – just too dense and lacking in finesse.
Pretty tones of pale blue line the interior – cake fridges and displays take centre stage. There’s a basic outside area carpeted in AstroTurf with simple tables and chairs. They would do well playing some music as it would liven up the atmosphere. It’s more of a pick-up-and-go than an eat-in establishment.
There’s no liquor licence, but there is a rudimentary selection of teas, coffees, juices and the like.
Service is on the casual, slow side. Waiters are friendly, but could do with more knowledge when it comes to the menu.
