Critic's review

A great spot for business lunches, with its open spaces, plush armchairs, vintage décor and evident attention to detail. Go for steak and cocktails. (EO mag 2014)

David Higgs, the man who launched the kitchen, is gone, but his influence clearly hasn’t. Chef Stuart Cason has maintained his Modern Comfort Food dream. The menu has not changed an iota since his departure but a mouth watering 3 course weekly special has been introduced; it’s a compact choice of offerings relying on seasonal and organic ingredients. There’s a clever use of taste and textures in dishes like the baby green leaf salad with asparagus shavings and duck’s egg, which comes with fried goat’s cheese balls and roasted hazelnuts. The sea bass is a winner and the lamb shank is given a yummy Italian twist.

    Wine
A disappointingly small wine list with rather high mark-ups. There is a selection of each varietal which complements the different dishes on the menu.

    Service
The serving staff are friendly, but not hugely attentive, and can’t really answer intricate questions about the menu.

    Ambience
    It’s vibey, airy and contemporary.

    And...
Its name reflects its setting in the hub of teaming Sandton and it’s a great place to chill and unwind as you watch the buzz in the streets below you. (JW, October 2012)
  • Food
Cape Town’s loss is Johannesburg’s gain and Eat Out’s Chef of the Year for 2011, David Higgs, is now making waves on the Gauteng culinary scene. A nicely sized menu features seasonal and organic ingredients. The food is superb, from the green herb soup with nut brittle and the risotto with pickled beetroot, to the succulent braised pork belly and the grilled seabass on wild rice and barley risotto.

    Wine
A compact wine list. Some of the whites are pricier than the reds.

    Service
David, when he’s not in the kitchen, makes personal contact with the diners. The waiter was friendly, but not as knowledgeable about the wine list as he could have been.

    Ambience
It’s contemporary and vibey with wooden floors, oversized lampshades, welcoming splashes of red, and an open kitchen where you can see the chefs in action

    And...
It’s all in the attention to detail and brilliant use of textures. The seabass comes with three types of cauliflower: an ultra-smooth puree, char-grilled florets, and wafer-thin shavings of raw cauliflower. (September 2010, JW)

  • How can Eatout recommend a place with such inconsistent read bad reviews on top of list for best sundowners in Jburg and leave out the actual best places for sundowners in Joburg! Strange

  • We had afternoon drinks at Central One Bar & Restaurant. I have not eaten at the restaurant since their famous chef left and cannot comment on that.

The drinks and cocktail snacks that we ordered were good but took an age to arrive and that was after we struggled to get someone to serve us. One guy eventually went to the bar to ask for bar menus and then later he went back to the bar to place our drinks order. Only later did a waiter arrive - not good.

  • I had dinner at Central One on Saturday 4 January. It was my first time at Central One and I was hugely impressed with their menu and although the wine selection was small, it was enough to compliment the menu.

My starter of smoked duck, duck liver pâté and confit duck was well prepared, beautifully presented and really tasty.

My main of panfried salmon on a bed of saffron risotto surprised me on many levels. Few chefs can really prepare risotto well, but I must say Central One got it just right.

The restaurant is elegant but relaxed and the spaciousness adds to a sense of privacy.

Pity about the many flies in the dinning area. The attention to detail in the food on your plate isn't reflected in the attention your waiter affords your table, which was disappointing. Otherwise it was a pleasant experience. I would recommend Central One any time!

  • A wonderful experience overall - beautiful views over Sandton, great ambience, delicious food and good service. The lamb was succulent and the puddings were fantastic. A must for foodies.

  • The food was reasonably good but the service was appallingly bad. Worst was the fact that the chairs had not been cleaned properly with food residue collecting between the the armrest and cushions.
