  • We have been quite a few times to the old one at the Buzz, and this one and have always enjoyed the food.

  • Very poor indeed. The food was luke warm at best, very bland. The waiters are extremely slow in clearing the table. There are plenty more options with better quality.

  • Had lunch at the Chef and the Fat Man on Witkoppen with my family and a friend today. What an unmitigated disaster! Despite their extensive wine list, when I asked for a particular wine, I was told that they only had three choices available - take it or leave it! I requested a medium rare 300g rump steak which arrived as a luke-warm, carbon-copy of the well-done 200g rump steak ordered by our friend. My requested side-order of vegetables never appeared. My wife ordered a baked potato with her burger and was given chips. When she pointed this out to the waiter, he then returned with mash, claiming that the baked potatoes were no longer available. The so-called live entertainment was loud, intrusive and amateurish making normal conversation impossible. Overall, the place looks run-down and dilapidated and poorly maintained, if maintained at all. Service was painfully slow with the waiters being nowhere to be seen most of the time. When my daughter complained to the manager, the response was a shrug of the shoulders and the comment that "the staff cannot cope". What a waste of time and money!

  • We went to Chef and The Fatman for a Sunday lunch with our family. What a disappointment. Very bad service in addition to food which was off, was a disastrous combination. Experience not to be repeated!

  • I booked a table of 8 for breakfast on the Saturday of the Easter weekend. The entire experience was a terrible disappointment. The buffet was cold and the range was not anywhere near as good as when you were located at the Buzz. The cappuccino machine was not working and the filter coffee was also cold. We were told that we could order omelettes from the waiter, which we were later realized that we were charged extra for in addition to the cost of the breakfast. One of my guests does not eat pork or beef but was told that the kitchen could not prepare chicken for her. Strangely, she was later told that she could have chicken as one of the fillings in her omelette! The service was bad, the tables were grimy and the atmosphere terrible. This was actually our second visit since you moved premises. The first visit was about a year ago and the experience was not an enjoyable one, however, I put it down to just being a one-off experience since I always enjoyed the restaurant when it was located at the Buzz. After the last visit I definitely will not be returning.

  • In February, I made a booking with Nicky Da Costa (manager) for Chef and the Fatman to host a 30th birthday on the 23 March 2013.

When setting the menu we agreed on the meals that will be served at our table as they were to be printed on the themed menu that would be available on the table. When I arrived home, I had a look at your menu and prices on your website and discovered that Nicky had overcharged me on the quote.

I phoned to find out if she can revise the quote to the prices as displayed on your website and waited almost a week for a reply.

I received her reply with the revised quote and noticed she had taken the Lamb Potjie off. Nicky did not consult with me about this and the menus were already printed with the meal options listed. I replied to her email asking why she had removed the meal from the quote and never received a response from her side. I then phoned her about 4 days later and requested that she include the Lamb Potjie and that we would then notify our guests that we estimated approximately R150 a head however there had been an error with the meal planning and that all meals would be charged individually. When some of our guests requested the Lamb dish, they were advised that the restaurant did not have stock and that the chefs were not informed about the possible meal in question. When some of the same guests requested the Creme Brulee, they were once again disappointed to be informed that the restaurant never had stock.

In addition, there were multiple complaints about the chicken tasting bland and waterlogged as if it had come out of the freezer as well as the steak being served cold, nevermind the fact that we waited almost 90 minutes for our meals!

On the 23 March 2013, Nicky was to oversee all the preparations of which she showed little involvement. Everything I had discussed with her was a waste of my time as she showed absolutely no interest at all to my requests. We later had another member of staff take over from Nicky as Nicky was occupied with another table and appeared more interested in their conversation the entire evening and not once did she adhere to her duties as manager.

During the evening, not once did any management come over to our table of 20 guests and ask if the food/service etc was alright?

When we recieved the bill, we were charged R320 for the snack platters however we were quoted R280 a platter. That alone shows the lack of communication as displayed by Nicky.

I do not complain about much but something like this needs to be mentioned as it not only ruined everything I worked so hard to prepare for my boyfriend's 30th birthday dinner but has also created an embarrasment on me with our friends, family and guests for selecting such an inconsiderate venue to host a milestone birthday.

This is something that will never be erased from our memories all thanks to the ignorant staff that you employ.

  • What a DISAPPOINTMENT. We took 6 guests to Christmas Lunch and it was shocking to say the least. No atmosphere, waiters running around bringing a glass at a time, dirty cutlery, and the food. Gammon not cooked, other food cold and tasted of fly spray. I was informed there was going to be a spit-braai never found that. Oh dear what a disaster, a very embarrasing day for us hosts who took folk we had invited. Then to crown it all as we were leaving we thought we had gate-crashed a staff party with staff chasing each other around the property. You have lost the plot since moving to your new location. We will not be back.

  • I booked a table for 18 for lunch on Sunday and the service was poor. We waited for food for 1 hour and 45 minutes and that for me is unacceptable. We were told that they don't have enough grills and they are extremely busy on Sunday. I used to love the restaurant but after that experience I will never go there again - the manager did not even have the decency to come and apologize or give us a discount after paying R3500 for food that took almost 2 hours.

I personally think that they should not do table bookings for large groups because they are not able to cater for high numbers.

  • We were thrilled to discover that this restaurant hadn't disappeared. Sadly, it is no longer the vibey, chic, fast-paced eatery of old. It has become a bottom of the range steak and pizza joint, with sticky tables bearing no cloths. Our booking was not noted. Service ok, but menu limited and food mediocre. So disappointing. Definitely won't be going back.

  • Had breakfast here a few weeks ago and it was brilliant! happened to be in Gauteng on Friday so thought wed have dinner there. WHAT A MISTAKE. Lack of cohesive management, poor new under-trained waitresses, wrong starters, ice cold food on ice cold plates for mains, overcooked chicken, blue steaks served med rare, then on the second attempt, the sirloin is butterflied and served med well!! Poor presentation, and all this R200 per cover??? I dont think so, well never again for us country bumpkins.

  • Couple of friends and I decided to visit the Chef and the Fatman in Centurion(Grey owl village) as we heard they serve a breakfast buffet at R39! Too good to be true right! What a pleasant surprise. the service was great even though they were jam packed on a Saturday morning. We had such a laugh when the waiter came over to remind us that its a buffet and we can go for round two. Sadly we were stuffed as we had pastries, yogurt, muesli etc before enjoying the hot breakfast. will definitely visit again

  • We visited Chef and The Fat Man in Centurion last week and what a nice surprise. Our steaks were cooked to perfection - medium rare as requested. It rivalled the best steaks weve had in Pretoria and to put it into context, we frequent the award-winning steakhouses in the area. The service was good and the waiter very attentive. We will definitely be back!

  • Chef and the Fatman opened in Centurion and we tried it out on the third night of being open. The service was terrible and the food was also bad. My medium-well steak arrived blue! The calamari was poor, so we ordered the chicken instead, which was still pink, 100% raw on the inside! This after there were no jalapeno poppers in stock and no more gin for a second round of drinks! One manager after the other visited our table, but, not with much success. The steak was only cooked to medium-well after sending it back 3 times.

  • As a regular at The Chef and the Fatman, I am never disappointed with the experience I receive from the restaurant. When you walk in you are greeted by friendly faces and the cozy family atmosphere makes you feel like you never left home. The food is hearty and the desserts are a reson on their own to return. The owner is very accomodating and he rally makes you feel like a Fatman Family Member.

  • What a superb experience, I wondered around the center one morning and found the best buffet breakfast in a very long time. I have come back and it is consistent which is like having found a gem in the heart of Fourways. Dinner is so chilled in the tree area and the Fatman is forever funny. Love this place, you have to go - but book for evenings as word is gettting out how great the food is and what value for money the Fatman really is - watch out for their specials which will surprise you.

  • For a new restaurant, we were so disappointed to see such a boring menu - nothing exciting of any note. Service was lackadaisical and food quality so-so. Club steak produced was very poorly presented and food lukewarm. Overall view was it was OK but no need to return.
