Food
Obviously the thing to eat is meat, so start with thinly sliced smoked Springbok carpaccio, delicious meat patties on a skewer with a spicy dipping sauce or smoked snoek on toast, then go on to one of the excellent steaks. If you are into warthog, crocodile, ostrich and kudu, have them individually or all together on a large skewer. Finish with nougat ice cream.

Wine
Quite a comprehensive list, with some local classics.

Service
Very good and attentive.

Ambience
Inside, it is a traditional unintimidating South African steakhouse; outside with ‘the view’ is a whole lot more cosmopolitan.

And...
Try one of the delicious double-thick milkshakes for a retro kick. (GL, September 2010)

  • I can't understand why this restaurant received good reviews elsewhere. It was one of the worst eating experiences we've had - made worse by the fact that the food is so expensive. We were a party of six and two of us ordered ribs. The one portion was far bigger than the other. When we asked about it a man, presumably the manager, responded by saying that the kitchen staff should've checked they were both the same size then mumbled something about the bone density or some such rubbish. When we just stared, gobsmacked at his ridiculous response, he then reluctanty asked if he should bring more ribs to make the portions equal. The waiter missed two things we ordered and when one of us pointed out he brought ice in the Coke when there was a specific instruction not to. He gave a glass for my friend to remove the ice hersefl. I can't get over that. My husband got a beer that was completely flat, which was replaced. The food was also a terrible disappointment. A R195 steak should be something special, this wasn't worth R50. We don't mind paying for good food. This was not good by a long shot. The quality of the ostrich, springbok and boerewors was mediocre at best. The food was cold and the vegetables actually quite inferior. I would rather go to Spur than back to this place. Yes, it is really that bad. Poor tourists...

  • I'm extremely disappointed with a meal I had on Saturday 16 June at City Grill in the V & A Waterfront. I ordered "Kudu" and believed this would be a steak or medallions at least. I got four very thin slices of tough meat. It almost looked like offcuts. It was dry and tasteless. The rice was undercooked and the vegetables were mushy and overcooked. I've had Kudu before and know what it tastes like. The waitron didn't seem to care about my complaint. The manager said "so sorry" but the damage was done. They didn't even offer to replace the meal with something else.

It's a rip-off to pay R169 for this meal. Afterwards I looked at the menu again and realized that there is actually very little info about the cut of meat. So, it's obviously done on purpose. Not giving customers enough information is just as bad as misleading them with the wrong information.

    I feel robbed.

  • Best steakhouse experience in South Africa! We started our evening with a beautiful wine (Lanzerac Cabernet) paired for us with our meal. Our steaks were perfectly done and tasted absolutely incredible. Been to Cape Town several times, but stumbled upon this jewel last night! A definite visit if you in Cape Town.

  • My expectations were very high as we were rallied in by the charming host. The food on the menu sounded amazing. We started off the evening with a stunning wine that was wonderfully paired by the Sommelier with our food. The Oxtail and Spare Ribs were to die for! A definite must if you are in the Waterfront. Please open a branch in Johannesburg!

  • I’ve was in the restaurant business not so long ago, working as waitress at many restaurants in Cape Town, one of them being the City Grill, but that was some time ago. I also worked in some fine-dining restaurants in America and then some Indian restaurants in England. I went for lunch at the City Grill with my friends over the December holidays and they really loved the food. The oxtail, fillet, biltong and the burgers for the kids.Being vegetarian I always stick to salads (Greek salad) when it comes to lunches (and I also had a pumpkin starter wrapped in phyllo).Unfortunately as many restaurants the chefs don’t really care about making salads. And my salad was a disappointment with iceberg lettuce and chopped up tomatoes and one whole piece of feta on top, not really up to the standards of their meat section. Why not pay attention to detail to the entire menu and not just certain meals? What about some nice fancy lettuce, cocktail tomatoes, spring onions, chives, fresh herbs and diced feta with olives. And salad dressing should be served on the side; as my salad was swimming in vinaigrette of the chef’s choice, and I prefer to add my own portion of only olive oil and balsamic vinegar. But believe me this not just the City Grill, I been disappointed so many times over the years with restaurant salads. I rather go for a braai where I know you will find some of the best salads made with fresh and non expensive products from the local supermarket.

  • I think we often dread it when you have to return something in a restaurant, but the friendly staff at City Grill make such an effort to make you happy, I was very pleasantly surprised when I returned my steak.I had just returned from abroad and was with a friend who asked me to choose a restaurant, and when my streak arrived undercooked (to be fair, this happens a lot in Cape Town--I understrand rather a bit under than a bi bit over!) I was worried we were in for a poor evening.Quite the contrary, the staff sorted the dish out promptly, gave me a fresh sauce, replenished not only the sides that come with the dish but ALL the side orders and extras--at no extra charge. The winning attitude of the City Grill staff certainly saved the day and the food was pretty decent too!
