Food
Dale’s serves a varied menu catering for all tastes, although (understandably) limited fare for vegetarians, as the focus is on serving quality, value for money steaks. To start with, the springbok carpaccio on a rosti is a great option, the rich meat well balanced by the crisp potato round. The mussel starter is beautifully prepared in a creamy white wine sauce, rich in flavour, which must be mopped up with a slice of thick bread to get every last drop. As far as the meat selection, the most notable is the offer of two venison dishes, which allows for the diner to experience a number of cuts of venison that represent South Africa very well. The first of these dishes is the ‘Three Musketeers’, offering springbok, kudu and ostrich fillet medallions, each accompanied by a sauce to match, namely mushroom and sherry, berry, and pepper and almond. This is a great option for those with a smaller appetite and a taste for venison. The meat is perfectly cooked and, as with all other main meats, is served with your choice of either chips, rice, mash, rosti or side salad. For those with a large appetite, the second venison option is the ‘Big Five’, which includes the aforementioned three cuts, but also features two extra cuts, namely impala and warthog, again with accompanying sauces, a herb butter and mustard. The springbok certainly stands out, perfectly paired with its mushroom and sherry sauce. Their signature steak dish is the Special Reserve “21”, a seared fillet steak served with their own herb butter. It’s certainly a noteworthy dish, the meat being so tender it melts in the mouth (you don’t even need a steak knife), and the well balanced butter sauce adding just the necessary burst of flavour. Moving on, you can also order rump, sirloin or the favoured T-bone steak. Other side options to order includes stir-fried or seasonal vegetables, Greek salad, onion rings or another speciality of theirs, the Bloom ’n onion, which is a lightly battered, flower shaped deep-fried onion with prego sauce and sour cream, an indulgent treat. When it comes to dessert there is a good selection of firm favourites are on offer, including crêpes Suzette, traditional malva pudding, chocolate brownies, chocolate mousse, homemade Italian ice-cream and the ever popular crème brûlée. If space is a challenge, opt for their Don Dale’s, a deliciously smooth and comforting Don Pedro with a double shot of Frangelico, topped with toasted almonds.

Drinks
The wine list offers a good range of varietals and local brands, as well as French Champagne. All fairly well priced and corkage comes in at R40 per bottle.

Service
Very friendly and efficient. From receiving the booking to the reception by knowledgeable waiting staff, the experience is of professional service, which makes for a great dining experience.

Ambience
Despite the fact that it is a large space, it is nonetheless warm and inviting. Accents of dark wood and the crisp white tablecloths serve to enhance the classic steakhouse atmosphere. Although situated in a shopping mall, when seated inside one is not really aware of this.

And…
There is a separate inside bar with daily bar specials and a great atmosphere, it is also the smoking area. Additional space is also available upstairs for conference type events or private dining when hosting a special occasion.

  • An amazingly themed restaurant with a friendly host and staff alike. Happy to see local craft beer on the menu as well as reasonably priced spirits. The select-reserve steak is advertised on the menu as "the best steak you'll have". Naturally I was skeptical but opted to try it anyway. I must say; they were not wrong - the best steak I've ever had, bar none. I urge any steak lover to give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

  • I dine about once every month at Black Angus and go primarily for the ribs on Monday nights. On Friday evening after picking up a friend from the airport I took a chance trying to get a table here for a late quick bite to eat. The service is good, the hostess was very friendly and uncomplicated. The last time I visited I noticed the bread basket before the meal consisted of 2 "Albany or similar type" bread slices, I passed this off as being, perhaps an emergency. I was disappointed to see this seems to be the standard. It would be nice to have some better quality bread or rolls especially since the steak is so good and the wine collection above average. It just brings down the experience a little bit. The prices are reasonable

  • This is without a doubt my favourite local steak place. They are perfectly cooked and great range of options. Though the ribs are to die for too. The meat falls off the bone. The service is amazing. Friendly and professional service. Went on the 3rd for my birthday and was not disappointed. No doubt will be back again and again.

  • I have dined at Dales Place before and was really impressed, so i decided to book a table for my husbands Birthday. I phoned a day before his Birthday to make sure that they are aware of it. I also asked the manager on duty if they can put a candle in his dessert etc. He eagerly agreed and told me that they would also play him Happy Birthday on the piano and he gets a little gift at the end of the evening. I was really excited and thought i had made a good decicion, but unfortunately the evening turned out to be quite the opposite. When we arrived the front of house person was obviously not aware that we were a Birthday booking and he seated us on this small table, that was supposed to be romantic and that most couples loved sitting at. I requested a bigger table and they happily gave it to us. The rest of the evening went quite well....food and wine were excellent. Then, after we ordered dessert, i quickly went to the bathroom. To my horror when i got out, i heard that the piano man was playing Happy Birthday already and when i got back to the table my husband said he had to send the waiter back with our desserts until i got there. The Happy Birthday song was played again and the waiter brought our desserts, my husbands with NO CANDLE!! I told this to the waiter but it was like he didnt care that there was no candle, or he didnt know about it. I was very disappointed and tried to save the evening by giving my husband the tables candle, jokingly to blow out. My husband got the gift though that was 2 chocolates. The waiter didnt even mention that THAT was the gift, so we thought it was our after dinner sweets! I didnt want to spoil the evening, so i decided to not make a scene or complain. I did call the restaurant in the morning though. I asked to spoke to the person whos name i got. I started to lodge my complaint with her and she just gave the phone to another manager. Fair enough, the guy i spoke to was the actual manager on duty that night, but you dont just give the phone to someone else!! Phone manners! He apologized for the candle, said he thought i meant i want a candle on the TABLE! He also apologized for the waiter. We will go eat at Dales Place again, but i dont recommend it for a Birthday.
