Owners description

Sister restaurant to De Volkskombuis, De Oewer offers you a more al fresco style of dining. Situated next to the Eerste River (behind De Volkskombuis) at De Oewer you can let your hair down and relax while you not only enjoy the delicious delicacies brought to you but revel in the relaxing and calming effect of the oak tree canopy above you. The beautifully crafted deck offers you a serene place so sit with views of the river while the garden seating creates a romantic setting for you to enjoy your food in. Children are always welcome and the newly constructed play park will keep them busy while you enjoy your meal.

The setting is fantastic. Unfortunately the prices and the food brings it down. When you order marrow bones for starters, they are ice cold in the inside. The manager then brings you a pathetic little salad to make up, and a new marrow bone that is also still frozen inside. When you order a baby chicken from the menu for R90 or so, you get a tiny leg and thigh, 3 baby potatoes and I can't remember what the other tiny thing was, but obviously it made no difference. Ice cream and chocolate sauce is two scoops and a drop of chocolate. The prices for what you get is pathetic to say the least! Its a rip off! (Oh, the wine was great thanks).

The seating at De Oewer is predominantly outside so pick the day for your visit carefully. The menu is interesting and the idyllic setting is geared for functions.

Deciding to discover some of what Stellenbosch had to offer, I ended up at De Oewer for Sunday lunch. What a great setting and relaxing ambience. Topped off with a fantastic gourmet burger! Wow - tasty and enormous. Had a great time - thanks.

Excellent food in a stunning outside venue. Something to come back to. I found the portions somewhat small, but then I possibly have a larger than average apetite and had I asked for a larger portions, I sure I would have gotten them. Its and outdoor venue, with only a few indoor seats, so dont go when its cold or windy. On a typical summers evening, its simply bliss. It may be best to phone first and find out what the weather is like, just to be sure.
