Owners description

This little Tulbagh gem specialises in all things favoured by locals. Their menu consists of delicious treats and meals such as roosterkoek, melkkos, 'kiep-in 'n-koppie', Boland Bunnychows and much more. If comfort food is the thing you love, stop by and taste the comfort…South African style. In winter they've got a cosy fire place that'll keep you warm and toasty and in Summer, enjoy alfresco dining in their 'shady garden'.

  • What a surprise we got when our food was brought in tin plates.
The real "Boere Kos" which we so much enjoyed.
Their crockery is "Blik Borde", Tin cups and plates.
The main attraction was the baboons chasing each other.
The staff were very friendly and we congratulated the cook
as the food was out of this world. Would recommend The Tolhuis
as a 5 Star restaurant, and travelers and visitors to Ceres must
pop in and enjoy the ambiance. There is a playground for children.

  • Wow! What a find! For starters we shared Irma's Vet Frikkies, a very quirky take on meatballs wrapped in vetkoek dough (served with moerkoffie). Then my husband had their Roosterkoek Bunnychow (very tasty and original) and I had the traditional Cape tomato stew. We waited a bit long, but this made sense seeing how full the restaurant was at that stage. Well done to the owners who obviously make an effort to make tourists feel welcome.

  • was bowled over by the setting and hospitality. They serve great little twists on traditional South African cuisine, like snoek tart and delicious roosterkoek.

  • Although the food is nothing to get too excited about, the setting is lovely. Service is relaxed, so best to go when you have lots of time to sit and enjoy your surroundings.

  • We had a wonderful dining experience. The food was fantastic and the portions more than generous. The restaurant has the most beautiful setting in the mountains. The hosts are friendly and made us feel relaxed. What a lovely experience!
