Critic's review

Lynda Ingham-Brown

This relaxed, slightly gritty, burger/pizza bar is part of the The Yard, a kitchen collective comprising Mucky Mary's (for breakfasts), The Bitch's Tits (for lunch), The Dog's Bollocks (all-day burgers) and Pizza Warehouse.

Food
Expect a slightly unorthodox dining experience: on arrival you're instructed to write your name on a blackboard and told to collect your own order from the kitchen when your name is called. Drinks are delivered to your table, with waitrons shouting orders to the bar, adding to the exuberant atmosphere. On offer for dinner are burgers with options for patties (including a vegetarian one), toppings and sauces, served with either a side salad or chips. You can add any of the breakfast offerings to your burger for an additional charge. There are also chicken wings done various ways, including Asian, hot, or sweet and sticky. The burgers are huge, so much so that they're served with a bread knife, and extremely satisfying. There's no skimping here. If you'd prefer a pizza, there are a few different options for bases: Neapolitan, with a chewy crust; New York style (500 mm in diameter with a chewy crust and lots of cheese); Romano style (oblong with a thick crust); and a build-your-own. Both the burgers and pizzas are great value for money and more than enough to share if you're not that hungry.

Drinks
Drinks include cocktails, draft beers, wine and ciders. The wines by the glass are slightly pricey for their size, so rather order a bottle if you plan on having more than one glass. Coffee is by local brand Deluxe Coffeeworks.

Service
Service is friendly, with lots of witty banter and teasing, which adds to the rough-and-ready vibe.

Ambience
Set in what could have once been a panelbeater's shop, very casual, with some tables open to the elements and the street.

Best for...
Not for the faint-hearted, this is a great place for a meal with friends or a raucous party.

  • urgers as big as your face! It took me way to long to visit the dogs bollocks for a burger, but I went to to the bitches tits for tacos and amazing sarmies often, It is loud and fast and really appeals to my sense of humour. Perfect to go for a drink and burger to unwind after a long shit day. I've seen many mixed reviews about the quality of the burgers, but I have to say mine was AMAZING! At first I was intimidated... How the hell do you eat a burger that is quite literally as big as you face? But once you get into it you forget that there are other people around you who may be watching you, but are probably eating their own burger just as badly, and just enjoy it.
