Food
The menu is divided into raw, small, cured, breads, offal or regional and seasonal sections. Our waiter assured us that the crispy lamb's head tourchon with curried beans is surprisingly popular. I can vouch for the crispy-based pizza with ample buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil leaves sprinkled on top. Freshly-picked porcini mushrooms with gnocchi off the seasonal menu were good too, as was the pork belly with black rice and chilli syrup. Sadly no room left to try either the apple crème with custard ice cream and miso caramel or the fried milk tart with berry compote. Next time...

Wine
A really well composed list with sprinklings of wines from other areas, not just Franschhoek. Also nice to see some other interesting varietals such as gewürztraminer, viognier and bukettraube on offer which makes for nice change.

Service
Attentive and happy to talk you through the menu, explaining how it works.

Ambience
Naked brick with Oregon pine detailing and slate floors combine to make it contemporary and chic. In winter the built-in Dover stoves work well while in summer the shady patio is ideal for people watching.

And...
Try their Jack Black beer for a change of pace. (FM, September 2010)

  • Picked the place randomly for lunch after wandering up Franschhoek's main road. The service was pleasantly attentive for a bistro. We sat outside & enjoyed two light, flavourful meals (picked from the starters menu). My squid salad in particular had lovely, fresh flavours. Both were beautifully presented. The meals of other diners around us looked very inviting as well - will return next time I'm in that part of the world.

  • We recently had lunch (again) at the Dutch East. A lively atmosphere, an interesting menu including the wine list and that all very reasonably priced. we'll be back next time we are in Franschhoek.

  • We enjoyed an awesome dinner there this past Friday.

On the outset it does not look like it would be suitable for children but we had an 11 year old and a 4 year old and they thoroughly enjoyed it from the blankets to keep them warm and the pictures to colour in that also serves and the children's menu.

The service is amazing, the food incredible and the desserts out of this world.

  • A gem. My wife chose while driving by on a perfect windless Sunday. The service was prompt and good. The ambience typical Franschhoek Sunday bustle. Unobtrusive on the side, not over-crowded in the shade. We shared Cajun spiced fried squid - marvelous and perfectly prepared. My main was the unsmoked pork ribs - wow, a culinary delight. Partner had the prawn spring onion noodles and this was just as great. Worthwhile to keep space for dessert. Rum and raisin brulee was good but the deep fried milk tart was exceptional. The pricing for this standard of food is exceptional value for money. Jack Black beer refreshing and tasteful. We highly recommend.

  • Standing prominent on Main Street this is a gem of a restaurant. I have visited the Dutch East a number of times, ranging from intimate special occasions with my loved one to sitting at a table from breakfast on Bastille Day till late lunch soaking up the spectacular view and ambience that it provides. The menu caters for a variety of dishes accompanied by a wine list that will not disappoint. The food is made from high quality ingredients to ensure exceptional flavour and taste. The service is on par with the patron’s expectation for the profile of the restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone that visits Franschoek for any occasion any time of day.

  • Happened to come upon this restaurant on 16 June. Had originally wanted to go to another restaurant (closed), but decided to give this a try. Best service I have ever experienced in the winelands - ever! When we ordered things, they arrived promptly. Our waitress and the matre'd checked on us, but were not over-bearing. Atmosphere was lovely and the restaurant warm and cosy. I had a tough time getting my head around the fusion menu, but the pork stirfry was absolutely delicious! Will be back!

  • Took my husband and son there on Fathers' Day and had the R150 special. The food and service were excellent! We all had three absolutely delicious courses and wine. Will definitely recommend it widely and hope to return to repeat the exercise very soon! Best meal we have had in a very long time. Impressive.

  • Ordered the kudu burgers that were on special. Not impressed at all. Burgers were raw inside and couldnt even taste the gorgonzola it claimed to have on it.
