Critic's review

The locals kept this rustic farm eatery under wraps, until Wine Tourism SA rated it in the Top Ten Winelands restaurants, blowing their secret. Bubbly slow food enthusiast Sharon Kriel and Christos Georgeu’s food is prepared with love and wine, the Barbera burger on panini and signature pot pies particularly so. Compile your own Mediterranean platter, have the Eat at the Farm Platter for two or indulge in linguini con fungi or puttanesca. The fresh bakes – spicy apple pie, New York-style cheese cake and choc brownies – rewrite the book on desserts.

Altydgedacht, Durbanville’s second oldest wine farm (circa 1698), lines up their multi-award winning wines at cellar prices, from flagship ABSA Top Ten pinotage to their signature white sauvignon blanc.

Waiters rise to the task to make visitors experience farm-style hospitality.

Whether you eat in the centuries-old cellar, the nomadic tent or alfresco, the charm of the old buildings and the natural surroundings are instant de-stressors.

If the weather plays along, ask for a picnic blanket and lounge on the grass without a care in the world. (EduT, October 2012)

  • The restaurant has been around for a little while now and we drive past it regularly. Friends of mine had been and described it as rustic.

A mini reunion came up with some tech friends and we met for breakfast. I had reserved a table which turned out to be a good idea. The restaurant became very busy and it really was a beautiful and scenic natural spot.

The atmosphere is very relaxed and there is a lovely area for children to play. I found the service friendly but a little slow and the breakfast was fine. I would still really enjoy to try their lunch and to take my kids along.

The setting and atmosphere really sets it apart from other wine farms in the area from my point of view. The menu was reasonably priced, so definitely a place we will visit in the future again.
